An energy storage #microgrid generated the on-site power needed for cadet field training (CFT) this summer on the grounds of the U.S. Army’s West Point Military Academy. The #batterystorage offers 146.7 kWH in nominal capacity, on and off-grid charging and discharging and about 3,000 cycles of lifespan. Why It Matters. The integration of #energy storage systems in tactical #military operations supports the US Army’s goal of reducing fuel consumption and reduces logistical support requirements. Eco Wave Power has received its final permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for U.S. First Wave Energy Project, at the Port of Los Angeles.

The U.S. Navy FLIP (Floating Lnstrument Platform) is a unique research vessel unlike any other. FLIP is essentially a giant, buoyant spar buoy, measuring 355 feet (108 meters) long. Unlike conventional ships, it can be flipped vertically. In its vertical position, the observation rooms end up submerged underwater, while the living quarters extend high above the surface. This allows for a highly stable platform for scientific research. FLIP is owned by the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) and operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. *Navigating the Future of Naval Power: Submarines Over Aircraft Carriers** As we look towards the future of naval warfare, historical insights and current technological trends signal a significant shift in power dynamics—one that increasingly favors submarines over the traditional reliance on aircraft carriers. The U.S. Navy must adapt to this changing reality to avoid potentially catastrophic losses in future conflicts, especially with peer competitors such as China and Russia. In George E. Plawski’s 2020 book *Never a Dull Moment*, he reflects on the legacy of the HMCS Bonaventure, Canada’s last aircraft carrier, and highlights its remarkable performance during its service. Even as a smaller vessel compared to the U.S. Navy's mighty Essex-class carriers, Bonaventure outshone them during fleet exercises, thanks largely to its well-trained pilots. Yet, despite its strong track record, the Bonaventure was retired in 1970, a move later deemed prudent as advancements in submarine technology heavily outpaced surface vessels. Historically, it's important to recognize that the U.S. Navy's supercarriers face vulnerabilities that could prove disastrous in real-world engagements. Admiral Hyman Rickover once noted that their life expectancy against Soviet submarines would be a mere 48 hours. This prescient observation rings even truer today, as modern submarines—equipped with advanced Air-Independent Propulsion and potent anti-ship missiles—have demonstrated the ability to “sink” supercarriers during exercises. It is critical to address the status quo within the U.S. Navy. Stonewalling structural changes will only lead to a reckoning that could greatly diminish our naval capabilities. The writing is on the wall: if we continue to view our fleets through the lens of conventional wisdom, we risk underestimating the evolving landscape of warfare. Submarines offer stealth, adaptability, and a formidable presence that challenges the traditional dominance of aircraft carriers. To secure our maritime superiority and ensure the safety of our allies, it’s high time the U.S. Navy prioritized the development and deployment of submarine capabilities. HMS Triumph (S93), the final Trafalgar-class submarine, sailed into HMNB Devonport on December 12, 2024, flying its decommissioning pennant and marking the end of 33 years of distinguished service in the Royal Navy. This historic return signifies the conclusion of the Trafalgar-class era, which began 41 years ago with the commissioning of HMS Trafalgar. The Royal Navy is transitioning to a single class of nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs), the advanced Astute-class. This shift reflects the evolving needs of modern naval warfare and the technological advancements in submarine design. HMS Triumph's decommissioning underscores the natural lifecycle of naval vessels, as its pressure hull has reached the upper limits of its lifespan after three decades of service. thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has reached an important milestone in the German-Norwegian submarine program: the design phase for the six Type 212CD submarines has been successfully concluded on schedule with the “Critical Design Review” (CDR). This success marks a key step forward in the construction of these state-of-the-art submarines. The CDR ensures that the requirements and expectations of the customers and of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems have been implemented in the final design. Christian Rogge, Head of Operating Unit Submarines at thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, underlines the significance of the project progress: “We are proud to have reached this important milestone. This means that we have now created all the conditions necessary for the construction of the 212CD submarines. Throughout the entire process, a shared understanding of the design and the design documentation ensured that gaps, risks and problems were identified at an early stage. This helps us to optimally align the planning, procurement and manufacturing chains with the project requirements.” In the next step, the production of the submarines will be intensified on the basis of the developed design specifications. The first tests are scheduled to begin in 2027. Delivery of the first submarine to the Norwegian Navy is scheduled for 2029.
