We finished in last place..It was my first year overseeing the program. All close games though! We had something solid to build on. This year went a bit differently. We turned those close games into wins. Those wins amounted to an undefeated season and regular season champs 🏆 As I sit here and prepare for our playoff run, I can't help but find the striking parallels between guiding my clients and coaching soccer. Like on the pitch, in business, success thrives on - strategy, teamwork, and relentless dedication. 🔍 Strategy: Just as I need to study the tactics and know our next opponent, The ability to analyze risks and tailor insurance solutions to safeguard businesses is vital. The Importance of Celebrating Small Wins 🏆 Having worked on several teams with long-term projects and programmes, I’ve learned firsthand how easy it is to become laser-focused on the big picture and ultimate goals. But one thing that’s made a real difference for the teams I’ve been a part of is celebrating small wins along the way 🎉.   Why It Matters: I’ve experienced projects that felt like endless uphill climbs 🏔️, and without those little moments of recognition, teams can start feeling disconnected and drained 😓. Taking time to celebrate even the smallest milestones recharges our energy ⚡ and strengthens team unity 🤝. Small victories are powerful reminders that progress is happening 📈, even when the finish line feels far away. Banking Is a Team Sport: Be a Captain 🏆 Winning teams have strong captains who get to know each team member personally and motivates them to excel. They provide each team member with clarity on what to do and how to succeed. They act as a personal mentor for each team member to help them win. How well do you know each team member? Do you know what "winning" means for them? How well do you know WHY they come to work every day and WHY they want to succeed? I encourage you to act like a captain and learn more about your colleagues. Leverage this knowledge to motivate each other to succeed. Sit down with your teammates and develop a clear plan for success. Hold each other accountable for executing that plan. Thank you Brad Howarth, what a fabulous session, you took us back in time when you shared your expertise in "Transformation and risk leadership" at Governance Institute of Australia GRMF 2024 In the age of explorers people took risks which we wouldn’t do now but the benefits were so substantial that doing nothing was just not an option Nowadays there is still so much to discover and we need to get on the boat, by doing so we have the opportunity to look forward and see what is possible. Embracing risk approach enables us to look forward. Freedom is the ability to make choices, the greatest risk is running out of choices. In an interview with the shift manager on duty at the time of the Piper Alpha oil rig disaster (1988) he said that as each option was removed one by one, the last choice was stay and fry or jump into the burning freezing waters of the North Sea and possibly die. He incredibly survived). In organisations and our roles, sometimes the easy & good options have all been removed so that the only option left are the hard & scary options. The risk of doing something is less than the risk of doing nothing. Next time you reference a ‘burning platform’ remember that if you truly are standing on a burning platform, you're already out of good & easy choices. We know that organisations do not last forever, they either continuously transform or die. The ones who transform are the ones who regularly lift themselves up and look around to see opportunities, they know how to align people behind purpose and equally they know that having a shared purpose with their people is critical, it’s why they will get up in the morning. Your people will respond positively if you are open and authentic. BMW is moving from simply being an automotive manufacturing to a mobility technology provider. They have 70m Customers who are not driving a BMW but are using their technology services. If you want to stay relevant in the marketplace then you much change at the same speed or faster than the marketplace.
