For the Value Chain Platform actively engaged members: Leadership, much like tending to a new crop, is never easy. Right now, you are sowing seeds at the very beginning of the process, and it’s difficult to envision the full harvest. And this is where real leadership matters most—at the roots, far from the spotlight. There won’t be applause for watering the fields, or recognition for removing the weeds, but it is this patient cultivation of the fundamentals that leads to a fruitful harvest. True growth requires tilling the soil and nurturing what’s beneath the surface, long before the fruits of your labor are visible.

For 40 years, NC State CALS' Agricultural Leadership Development Program has helped North Carolina farmers and agricultural professionals develop personal and professional leadership skills. “For me, it made the industry of agriculture bigger than the biggest field and longer than the longest row I was planting in Pender County,” said Larry Wooten, former president of the NC Farm Bureau, who was in the program’s first 1984 cohort. “The experiences and the trips — the investment that the college made in me through that program — instilled in me a willingness to give back.” Read more about the program's 40 years: http://ncst.at/Evbo50UjomE
