Happy International Day of Forests In the world of alternatives, natural capital is starting to gain momentum, both from both a return and impact perspective. Forestry funds typically invest in forested land or timber assets, such as lumber or pulp, and can generate uncorrelated returns over the longer term. Furthermore, they can also participate in gains from the voluntary carbon credit market. The theme for International Day of Forests 2024 is Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World. Have you considered forests in your portfolio? #alternativeinvestments #ForestDay #timberland #forestfunds #naturalcapital #forestry #lumber #timber

Swiss investment firm FLS® Forestry-Linked Securities has acquired a timberland asset in a deal worth more than $25 million to mark the first investment for its forestry strategy. Located in Eastern Paraguay, the 16,000 ha asset was being used for grazing cattle and is largely degraded. Roughly 10% of the land base is populated with native forestry. A further 10 to 15% will be reserved for conservation and renaturation. The mosaic-forestry strategy, combining afforestation and designated conservation will generate returns through FSC-certified commercial forestry and carbon sequestration. FLS® Forestry-Linked Securities deployed capital through a co-investment SPV, which held a $95 million first close in September and has been backed by a “single blue-chip European investor,” investor relations director Arthur Bagnaud told Agri Investor. The vehicle is open for further investments from external LPs. Having assessed multiple geographies, Paraguay presents an exciting opportunity due to the country’s conducive climate for tree growth, stable governance, land suitability and alignment with a local forestry operator. FLS has built up a strong local team and presence in Paraguay over the last 4 years, where it sees substantial growth opportunities. #fls #sustainableforestry #forestryinvesting #carbon #paraguay https://lnkd.in/e_Sdtxix

Our Ngāi Tahu forestry team have built capability in one of New Zealand’s most dangerous industries. I have valued all of my time with the team under Ngāi Tahu Holdings. So much to learn. A lot of people ask me, why do pine? One of my thoughts on this is… why does NZ do pine in general? We cut the trees down, we export to china and overseas, things get made and we import them right back in again. Nuts! We are crippled by these markets. This shift in acknowledging difficult business strategies is a testament to our leadership in Ngāi Tahu Holdings. As the lights of this industry begin to dim. Ka mua Kā muri, this is the industry setting a new course. The lights are just starting to flicker on in another room, a room of totara, tawhi and kahikatea… the tamariki of Tāne Mahuta. Matiu Coleman the GM at Ngāi Tahu forestry said to me a few months ago that we need to build our forests stronger and we need to build them for us. That kōrero has really stayed with me. The pine carries mana, just not in our whenua. Just as we harvest the tītī with mana, we must harvest the pine with mana. We must transition the industry. Look after our people and retain the capability. Transitioning industry is about mindset transition just as much as it is about commercial viability. We need to understand success measurements inside… and outside of the GDP. As one door closes, another door opens.

Recent article on how we produce and manage our Christmas trees and planted land at NI Farm Forestry sustainably. Sustainable production is a huge part of reaching the end result of a ‘perfect’ Christmas tree, and something I will be looking at in depth for a large section of my dissertation (which primarily discusses where the current market for Christmas trees is heading), as sustainable farming practices are becoming acknowledged by even those outside of the industry.
