President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen recently addressed the potential for a market-based system of nature credits to avert ecosystem collapse. Her words at DLD Nature touched upon important work that Biodiversity Credit Alliance is undertaking jointly with World Economic Forum and International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits, along with support from representatives of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. This is encouraging to all who have been engaged in this consultative process, but also highlights a challenge to key stakeholders to jointly set a high bar for integrity that can become the foundation for a credible, transparent, equitable, inclusive and scalable market for biodiversity credits. There are valuable lessons that can be learned from and built upon in order to catalyze much needed investment in biodiversity conservation. High-Level Principles, a paper to be jointly published by BCA, WEF and IAPB will help guide the emerging market in biodiversity credits and will be launched during #CBD #COP16 in Cali. A new market in nature credits needs the best start possible. As Synergy International looks forward to providing our clients and partners with access to legal experts and policy makers at the Sixteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16), the most realistic and impactful outcome of this meeting would be to establish a mandatory global reporting standard on a national level for biodiversity. Such a step up in framework should ensure that national biodiversity plans are no longer voluntary but binding, accompanied by financial incentives for countries that meet the new standards. We can all applaud the momentum established by National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) during the UN Biodiversity Summit in 2024, with over 200 countries having signed up to the voluntary reporting action plan. This was the last UN gathering to drive forward the issue of saving our planet's amazing biodiversity, a privilege that all of us who have lived life surrounded by natural beauty can no longer take for granted! As highlighted in this attached sober assessment of the World Wildlife Foundation, the voluntary nature of biodiversity reporting risks slowing progress at a time when urgent action is needed. A structured, transparent system—similar to the climate reporting frameworks—would ensure accountability, allowing for measurable outcomes and increased international cooperation. Nations excelling in meeting these biodiversity targets could access enhanced funding, reinforcing their commitment to preserving ecosystems. https://lnkd.in/gzSqHU5t Synergy International urges global leaders to advocate for this shift, leveraging COP16 as a pivotal moment to cement biodiversity protection as a fundamental pillar of environmental and economic policy. #COP16 #BiodiversityAction #Sustainability #ClimateAction #SynergyInternational #SustainableDevelopment #Conservation #GreenEconomy

As #COP16 draws to a close today with the news that #COP17 will be in Yerevan, Armenia in 2026, we reflect on the #Agriculture and #Conservation themes that must be addressed before then. · To tackle the global biodiversity crisis, agriculture must transition from a primary driver of biodiversity loss to a cornerstone of its solution. · Translating the Global Biodiversity Framework's targets into actionable, national strategies through National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) is crucial. · Governments must prioritise land health to sustain biodiversity, restore ecosystems, and enhance resilience across food and agricultural systems. · While the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework includes targets for reducing pollution and preserving genetic resources, less than half of NBSAPs address actions for agrobiodiversity conservation, sustainable genetic resource use, and resilient, diverse food systems. IUCN's 2024 "Conservation and Agriculture" flagship report demonstrates that better land management and #NatureBasedSolutions can drive biodiversity conservation, restoration and climate action without compromising food security or economic viability. With over half of the Global Biodiversity Framework’s targets directly connected to agrifood sectors, there is an immense opportunity for transformative change. By embedding #agroecology and sustainable agriculture practices into policy, we can foster biodiversity-friendly food systems that are socially just, economically viable, and resilient. Join us in advocating for sustainable food and agricultural systems as we strive to conserve and restore biodiversity by reading the report's key takeaways and recommendations for stakeholders here: https://lnkd.in/eQGGKTbw And read the full Flagship Report here: https://lnkd.in/ecEJxv8Z

As #COP29 in Baku moves through its second week, we reflect on the key achievements of #COP16 in Cali. There was a 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 #𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 & 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗜𝗣&𝗟𝗖𝘀): the ‘COP of the people’ delivered, with the creation of a new permanent body, which will allow IP&LCs to defend their rights and traditional knowledge more effectively. This new platform recognises IP&LCs as partners in decision making on tackling biodiversity loss. See the official announcements here: https://lnkd.in/dDfFW9eU IUCN supported the CGIAR COP16 session “Harnessing Agroecology, Agrobiodiversity and Family Farming To Transform Food Systems And Halt Biodiversity Loss” which highlighted the role of IP&LCs. 🌍 Reflecting on COP16 Biodiversity🌿 Our EcoAct team recently attended COP16 Biodiversity in Cali, Colombia. The conference highlighted both significant strides and ongoing challenges in our global efforts to protect biodiversity. Key takeaways include: - Commitment to Targets: While 119 countries have submitted biodiversity targets, a robust monitoring framework is still needed to track progress effectively. - Resource Mobilization: The goal to secure $200 billion annually by 2030 remains unmet, revealing a critical North-South divide in funding mechanisms. - Fair Distribution: The creation of the “Cali Fund” marks a historic step towards equitable sharing of genetic resources, though more work is needed to ensure its effectiveness. Despite these challenges, COP16 also saw positive developments: - Enhanced participation of indigenous peoples and local communities. - Alignment of climate and biodiversity policies. - New guidelines for managing invasive species and protecting marine areas. The strong presence of private sector stakeholders at COP16 underscores the growing recognition of biodiversity’s importance. It’s clear that collaborative, cross-sectoral approaches are essential for meaningful progress. Let’s continue to advocate for and support initiatives that drive tangible, positive impacts on our planet’s biodiversity. 🌱 #COP16 #Biodiversity #Sustainability #EcoAct #ClimateAction
