SA government and private companies should consider agroforestry, not only as a climate mitigation strategy, which I admit it is, but also as a better livestock production, soil protection, water retention and rural employment creation strategy. In the accompanying article the USDA and Nature Conservancy are showing leadership in the funding and implementation of agroforestry in the US.

I disagree with these authors' attack on marine farming, which I believe should be improved and expanded. Wild-catch of fish from the ocean for mass consumption is perhaps the only category of "agriculture" in which we still harvest from the wild. We have phased that out terrestrially. It is only a matter of time before we recognize that the oceans cannot support mass consumption indefinitely without careful management. marine farming is one piece of the puzzle.

A bit of positive news for farmers in National Landscapes in Wales 👍 A new funding scheme has been announced: Ffermio Bro https://lnkd.in/eCV542-x The scheme should support farmers to collaborate with National Landscape management bodies, with positive farming practices that contribute to the purposes of the National Landscapes, such as conservation and climate action. We've seen the benefit of a similar scheme in England- Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) - particularly for managing semi-natural grasslands, which often require capital items like livestock fencing. Hopefully Ffermio Bro will provide a similar boost for farmers of semi-natural grasslands in Wales. 🤞 (Ffermio Bro is Welsh for 'Local Farming') 😊 National Landscapes Association Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales

- Boring is Better in Fish Farming!💡 Nothing is as exciting as producing large smolt or market-sized fish on land. While it’s intriguing to see if technology works as promised and if cost estimates hold, sometimes the excitement leaves fish farmers wondering if the fish are still alive when they arrive in the morning. None of us want 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 kind of excitement. We need predictable, controlled aquaculture, where risk management and biological considerations come first. 🌱 At the Fish Farmer Konferansen 2024 this week, our VP Sales, Gunn-Marit Nerem, shared insights on making fish farming more reliable, from controlling environmental factors in land-based facilities to reducing stress on fish through smart production planning. In land-based systems, we can control every parameter—temperature, water quality, and beyond—creating opportunities to gather valuable data. This benefits both land-based and sea-based farming practices. 📊 Additionally, by reducing unnecessary handling, such as moving fish without sorting when it's not needed, and adjusting water flow for larger fish, we can improve fish welfare and efficiency. Less stress, better outcomes! 💧 You can read the entire article and summery from Gunn-Marits talk at the Fish Farmer conference on LandbasedAQ.no (In Norwegian, for plus members): https://lnkd.in/dEHzxEjS #Aquaculture #SustainableFishFarming #FishWelfare

Did you know that sea lice infestations originating from salmon farms are one of the biggest threats to the survival of wild salmon? We've prepared an update on the latest academic research about the environmental impacts of open-net salmon farming and the science is clear. Open net salmon farming has introduced acute and chronic threats to wild Atlantic salmon populations, as well as the wider marine ecosystem. Follow the link below 👇 for the the latest on this fundamentally unsustainable industry. https://lnkd.in/e6utjPQR
