There is possibly no chemical more vilified in modern culture than glyphosate. This chemical is plagued with coordinated disinformation campaigns, lawsuits, anti-science activist groups, and clickbait media headlines.
Glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide in the world, is the poster child for chemophobia. Even though over 30 years of data from regulatory bodies around the world confirm it poses minimal risk to humans, even for farm workers, and has less ecological impact than the herbicides it replaced, it is still painted as a dangerous substance.
The reality? With an oral LD50 of 5,600 mg/kg, glyphosate is less toxic than many conventional and organic alternatives. For instance, acetic acid (yes, that’s VINEGAR) and clove oil, both used as organic herbicides, have higher acute toxicity, yet anti-science groups like Moms Across America and the Environmental Working Group continue to undermine the safety of glyphosate.
Glyphosate-tolerant crops allow farmers to limit the use of herbicides with higher toxicity, reducing human & environmental risks. Claims that glyphosate harms bees, soil health, or water quality are unsubstantiated. In reality, glyphosate doesn’t bioaccumulate, breaks down quickly in soil, and isn’t being used to “douse crops”—farmers use just 24 ounces per acre in early crop fields - no crops are grown when this happens.
The fixation on glyphosate is driven by coordinated disinformation campaigns, lawsuits, and fear-mongering from these types of organizations with significant financial incentives. Lawsuits are conflated with scientific evidence and fuel public outcry, but are nothing more than opportunistic legal teams profiting from misinformation.
Why is glyphosate singled out when far more toxic herbicides - including natural alternatives are accepted without scrutiny? Fear and falsehoods about glyphosate harm public health: it isn’t just about the misinformation, but the consequences of beliefs and policies based on those myths. They hinder the development and implementation of scientific technology that can improve our lives and our planet.
