HumanAbility welcomes this morning’s announcement that the care and support industries will be the focus of the new Care and Support TAFE Centre of Excellence at Queensland TAFE’s Cairns campus. The Centre will bring together stakeholders from industry, Jobs and Skills Councils, universities, unions and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island health councils. This means that students studying aged care, disability support and mental health care will receive the high-level skills training needed to support these rapidly growing industries. Importantly, the Centre will also partner with First Nations groups so it can deliver culturally appropriate and safe training pathways for First Nations students – an approach HumanAbility knows from our stakeholders is most urgent. There are many significant outcomes that this Care and Support TAFE Centre of Excellence will help achieve for our workforces. You can read the joint Ministerial announcement here https://lnkd.in/g9R3payE A big shout out to the federal Skills and Training Minister, Brendan O'Connor and his Queensland counterpart, Minister Lance McCallum MP and their governments for their commitment to investing in our future care and support students and workers. #HumanAbility #careandsupport #TAFE

Dear Social Work friends As you may (or may not) be aware, the AASW has proposed some radically different, new education standards. While some flexibilities are definitely welcome and needed, other more extreme changes may seriously threaten the quality and future of social work in Australia. The poster below aims to make transparent some of these key changes, highlight the potential consequences, and advise on how you can join this social media campaign that aims to make the AASW reconsider... #socialwork #socialworkers #socialworkeducation #highereducation #AASW #socialjustice #placements #socialworkplacement #workintegratedlearning #diversity #equity #socialjustice #workforce #sustainable

Interesting to read the long awaited advice to ministers on qualification reform. The design group proposes three broad definitions of qualifications: • Purpose 1 – qualifications leading to a specific occupation (for example a licensed trade) • Purpose 2 – qualifications to prepare learners for multiple occupations within an industry • Purpose 3 – qualifications that develop cross-sectoral or foundation skills and knowledge which may be applied across industries, or lead to tertiary education and training pathways. The change from present seems to be purpose two, with a desire to support qualifications that could run across an industry to support mobility and reduce the current narrow competency specifications. I can see potential in areas like aged and disability care, and no doubt others. Broader specification of capabilities may require compromise on industry knowledge. Will follow this closely given the many reform attempts in recent years. Maybe this one, by shielding traditional trades, has a chance at adoption? https://lnkd.in/g8pJZZTp
