Happy AME Day! Today we celebrate the inaugural Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Day of April 20, 2024, in remembrance of Robert McCombie, the recipient of the first Air Engineer License on April 20, 1920. It is a day on which we ask air passengers to recognize: “No Engineers, No Flights” The AMEs are highly skilled and responsible individuals who continually strive for higher standards in aircraft maintenance, servicing, and handling in the interest of public safety. Airlines need to recognize that their success depends on the retention and development of these highly skilled professionals. In the interest of public safety, our trade strives for the highest standards in the National Airspace System. In Canada, a licensed AME is a person who is responsible for signing the maintenance release of certified aircraft and is licensed to do so by the national airworthiness authority, Transport Canada (TC). Their job is to ensure that aircraft are maintained in a safe and airworthiness condition for the flying public and crews. Canadian Aviation Regulations Subsection 605.85 of the CARs states that no person shall conduct a take-off in an aircraft, or permit a take-off to be conducted in an aircraft that is in the legal custody and control of the person, where that aircraft has undergone maintenance unless the maintenance has been certified by the signing of a maintenance release according to section 571.10.

It prompts a critical examination of the attitudes toward those who work below the wing, especially concerning compensation and respect. It's a stark reality that some may overlook the integral role AMEs play in ensuring the safety and comfort of air travel. The notion that their profession is somehow less deserving of recognition or work-life balance is disheartening, considering the gravity of their responsibilities. The disparity between the trust placed in skilled professionals to maintain aircraft safety and the lack of acknowledgment for their efforts is glaring. It's puzzling how companies can simultaneously rely on AMEs for the safe operation of their fleet while undervaluing their contributions. The dedication of AMEs is evident in their willingness to work unconventional hours and make personal sacrifices to uphold safety standards. Yet, their efforts often go unappreciated or unrecognized by those who benefit from their expertise. During challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic, AMEs have continued to demonstrate their adaptability and resilience, showcasing the transferability of their skills across various industries. Despite the hurdles they face, their commitment to ensuring aircraft safety remains unwavering. As the voice of AMEs grows louder and their value becomes increasingly apparent, it's crucial for companies to recognize and prioritize the well-being and professional development of these essential workers. After all, it is the skill and dedication of AMEs that keep our skies safe and our journeys secure. What a day in aviation maintenance.

Happy National Aviation Day. If you got there safely, remember the intensive training and sacrifices your professional pilots, aircraft mechanics, test pilots, and aircraft designers collectively made to make that happen. With today’s culture of safety and the significantly increased training and experience commitments it takes to fly, passengers it’s small wonder that all forma of Aviation continues to get safer and safer all the time, and that’s no accident. Next time you step off your airplane, thank your pilot. Oh one more thing, when judging a flight, there’s much more to it than landing, even though you may not see it. Things like planning, strategic turbulence avoidance, fuel management, weight and balance, performance calculations before every flight, constant en route weather evaluation, alternate airport planning, continuous instrument scanning, descent planning, airspeed management through configuration changes, and crew resource management, all for each normal every day flight.
