The company behind Flux, Black Forest Labs, is set to secure $200 million in a new funding round led by a16z, with its valuation expected to surpass the $1 billion milestone. Black Forest Labs, a Germany-based AI startup, specializes in developing advanced image-generation models. Its core team includes members who previously contributed to the development of the open-source image-generation model, Stable Diffusion. In August of this year, Black Forest Labs completed a $31 million seed funding round, also led by a16z. Angel investors included Brendan Iribe, Michael Ovitz, Garry Tan, Timo Aila, and Vladlen Koltun. The company's FLUX.1 model has achieved significant breakthroughs in image detail, prompt adherence, style diversity, and scene complexity. It outperforms popular models such as Midjourney v6.0, DALL·E 3 (HD), and SD3-Ultra in areas like visual quality, rapid responsiveness, size/aspect ratio variations, typography, and output diversity. Additionally, Black Forest Labs has collaborated with Elon Musk’s chatbot, Grok, to provide image-generation capabilities.
