Sales and Marketing at CBF Labels

It's a sad reality of job seeking that your ability to do the job, and your ability to interview for the job, are two completely different skills. Credit: Daniel Abrahams

A great interview doesn’t always reflect the skills needed for the role, and vice versa. It’s a tough gap to navigate.

Hard disagree. Our first interview at In Social covers the interview skills, but the 2nd interview requires the candidate to complete a proficiency test and then explain their work. No matter how good their interview was, if they can't do the job, they don't get it.

This is certainly what it can feel like. I think a lot of people posting are coming from the side of interviewer. This isn’t a nip at interviewers not doing their job, this is definitely to show what it feels like as an interviewee. I have done both many times over. For new jobs, and promotions alike. I will read a job posting and I can tell you right away I would be a great fit for the job and likely even a top candidate. But then comes the proverbial hoop jumping. You’re fortunate if you are in a company that truly looks at the talent as a whole but that is not the case for a lot of places.

It’s frustrating how much emphasis is placed on interviewing skills when the actual job often requires a completely different skill set.

Yes, and… IMO a third column is needed here: Requirememts In The Job Listing That We’ll Screen You Out For But Really Aren’t Needed To Succeed In The Job. Maybe something shorter but that’s my main frustration with online job listings during my search. Many roles I find would be a perfect fit but include very specific requirements for tools like HubSpot or Salesforce or other tools. I have the skills and experience to use any of these but haven’t worked in companies with the budget for them. If I can network my way to an interview I will, but otherwise I feel like I take myself out or am taken out of contention by someone who wrote a description that’s too narrow. Ok, back to try to complete my hubspot certification courses and at least make an attempt to show I’m capable with the tools before my software trial runs out!

The system’s broken. We’ve turned job interviews into theater performances. Imagine how many talented people are overlooked just because they don’t ‘act’ the part.
