Should Southgate drop Harry Kane from the England starting 11 for the Euro final on Sunday following another immobile performance that seemed to gum up the midfield? The equivalent question in my executive coaching practice is should I let the sales director go if his performance is continually falling behind target?
And the answer is always no, unless you can rule out all other possible causes for the faltering performance such as general market decline, product mis-match to market need, new entrant into market, suboptimal management of the sales director, suboptimal direction of the sales team etc.
Only once you have established that the problem springs from poor sales process, poor execution of the sales process or something more directly under the control of the sales director should you consider letting the sales director go.
Having the insight to look for the root cause of the problem and to consider all the different angles and perspectives before acting is one of the key learnings in my executives coaching group.
So Southgate should be looking from a variety of perspectives at whether Kane's performances so far are a key contributor to the team's somewhat stuttering progress to the final. And whether Kane's lacklustre efforts may yet hold the team back from taking the final step to bring the trophy home.
Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has just said that Kane should be left out to bring more vigour to the attack against Spain. And yet Kane has scored 3 goals and could yet win the golden boot for top scorer.
I agree with Meulensteen, but doubt that Southgate will be bold enough to take this approach. I'd be happy to moderate the Kane conversation Gareth, to help you consider all the alternatives before making a momentous decision.
💙Leadership at the Helm of Lions Club Ifrane Al Akhawayn: A Journey of Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose💛
As I sit here reflecting on my journey as the president of Lions Club Ifrane Al Akhawayn, I am overcome with a mixture of pride, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility. Leading this club is one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. It is a journey that constantly pushes me to grow, to find new solutions, and to work tirelessly for the greater good.
When you step into a leadership role like this, you quickly realize that it is not just about making decisions—it’s about inspiring a team, uniting a community, and sparking change. The challenges come thick and fast. Whether it's coordinating complex projects, managing a diverse group of passionate individuals, or navigating the many obstacles that come with turning an idea into a reality, there is no shortage of hurdles. But through each challenge, the vision of what we are trying to accomplish keeps me going.
But as any leader will tell you, no journey is accomplished alone. One of the greatest challenges I’ve encountered as president has been securing support for our projects. While we have an incredibly passionate team and a strong vision, the financial backing and logistical support we need to scale our efforts often require the collaboration of sponsors. The truth is, engaging sponsors—who believe in our mission, who share our values, and who are willing to partner with us to make these initiatives a reality—is not easy.
It takes time, persistence, and a clear demonstration of how their support can translate into tangible community impact. We’re fortunate to have a small but dedicated group of sponsors who’ve supported us, but the road to finding the right partners who truly believe in our cause is long and challenging. Their involvement is critical to ensuring the success of our projects, and as we embark on new initiatives, we continue to seek partnerships with organizations that share our commitment to making the world a better place.
If there are any sponsors out there who are passionate about driving positive change, who believe in empowering communities, and who want to partner with a group of dedicated individuals making a difference—Lions Club Ifrane Al Akhawayn is eager to collaborate. We welcome you to join us on this journey and help us turn our vision into action.
Together, with the right people by our side, we can overcome any obstacle and reach new heights of success. Let's work together to build a brighter future—for today, and for generations to come.

Florentino Perez Proves: Real Support Isn’t Just Words—It’s Action!
Florentino Perez made headlines by choosing not to attend the Ballon d’Or celebrations when Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior was overlooked for the award.
This gesture goes beyond words—it’s a reminder that true support is shown through actions, not just words.
In both sports and everyday life, saying “I’m here for you” often falls short. Actions—like standing up for colleagues, backing friends publicly, or showing up when it matters—speak volumes.
Think of a manager who supports their team under pressure or a friend who shows up in tough times. This commitment builds trust, loyalty, and respect.
As Perez has shown, it’s about showing people they’re valued by actively standing by them. When words are backed by meaningful action, it empowers and uplifts those around you.
Let’s remember that real support is demonstrated, not just declared.
Focus and Consistency
I'm not an avid AFL fan, but I watched the Grand Final yesterday because a colleague, who’s a die-hard fan, got me interested. I also had the chance to attend a function at the Sydney Swans, where their GM shared insights into the club’s values and culture—very impressive!
All week, the media was confident the Swans would win. No team had ever come from 5th position to win the flag, and Chris Fagan, Brisbane's coach, has never played at the highest level. At 62, he’s also the oldest coach in the league (never underestimate experience!). Yet, Brisbane took control from the first quarter and never looked back.
As someone who works with many CEOs leading large teams, one thing I know for sure is that being crystal clear on your strategy and sticking to it is often a winning formula. How did a team like the Swans, who led all season, stumble at the final hurdle? Was it overconfidence? An organisational issue? Or did Brisbane simply execute their strategy better?
Brisbane's win is a great reminder that focus and consistency are key, whether in sports or business.
