An update on recent activity and achievements of Indigenous Peoples on a global scale from Ghazali Ohorella - One of our Pacific representatives. As Ghazali says - these advances are the result of years of advocacy and commitment to progress the rights of the worlds Indigenous Peoples… I also acknowledge our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have actively engaged at this level - often without support from our government. While some will argue that we need to focus on “tangible” opportunities for change - and many of our people are focused and working on getting through the day to day at the community level, I acknowledge and argue that this work is as important because it creates the conditions necessary to recognise First Nations place in, and contribution to the global community - but also provides the legal and moral frameworks for the realisation of our human rights…the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is the representation of those rights. It’s so good to be able to celebrate these wins for Indigenous Peoples ✊🏽🇺🇳
Teaching Indigenous leaders how to master UN diplomacy | Daily strategic playbook creator | Helping 1000+ Indigenous voices get heard at the UN
2 years in the making, 2 days to make history. 4 huge wins for Indigenous Peoples at the UN. My friends, in just 48 hours, we smashed through barriers! On July 18-19, we made history by participating directly in the Human Rights Council. For generations, we were told our voices didn’t belong there. Our presence was seen as disruptive. However, this moment proved to be more profound and graceful than anticipated. These are the 4 historical changes: 1. Breaking the Status Quo Indigenous Peoples had long struggled for recognition in international forums. We had to conform to non-governmental organization (NGO) roles to be heard. This HRC session marked a shift, with Indigenous Peoples speaking directly for themselves, breaking the confines of past practices with the now famous "IP" badge. 2. Recognition as "Peuples Autochtones" The placard reading "Peuples Autochtones" was a significant achievement. This recognition wasn't just a name tag. It symbolized decades of effort to claim a rightful identity and the acknowledgment of their unique cultural and historical narratives. 3. Direct Participation For the first time, Indigenous delegates spoke without intermediaries, using our own voices to represent our Indigenous Peoples. This direct participation marked a departure from past practices, where we had to navigate through NGOs. 4. Indigenous Representation Dr. Binota Dhamai (PhD) role as the first Indigenous co-facilitator at the Council was a historic moment. His presence signified a new era where Indigenous Peoples are not only present but are active participants in shaping international discussions and decisions. These milestones signify a turning point in Indigenous diplomacy at the UN. The achievements are a testament to the perseverance, patience, and partnership of Indigenous leaders and our allies. By continuing to assert our rights and presence, we are rewriting the narrative and ensuring our voices are heard in global conversations.

#inspireinclusion I have been going back and forth on this theme observing what is being done to celebrate this day of 'International Woman's day'. I was wondering how 'inspire' will make a difference without addressing the interdependencies and to my relief, realized the UN Theme for IWD 2024 is #investinwomen : accelerate progress Here is the official website - https://lnkd.in/g5R-NNRw #inspireinclusion is a theme given by a marketing org. 'Investing and enabling Inclusion' is wanted and asked for, in myriad ways by different strata of society. A school going kid both in rural and urban schools, would ask for the appreciation, kindness & love from the teachers. This small but powerful gesture would build little humans to be assertive adults. Recently a friends child (7 yrs) mentioned there is only 1 kind teacher and wished there were more. Catch them young.....invest with love, encouragement #investinwomen A new graduate from a rural background without access to ‘www’ seeks guidance on what does it take to crack an interview and know the nuances of getting into a corporate world. (There are organizations like 'Aspire for her' making an effort to enable such women through mentoring) #investinwomen A new bride wishes to be treated with respect and dignity and not a substitute for a maid and a cook / a machine producing male heirs. I recently came across a news article where the bride was given an instruction checklist on ‘how to conceive a male child’ by her father-in-law. When will we remember and acknowledge our ‘mothers’. #investinwoment (Beti bachao, beti padao) These are only a few examples from the urban and rural setups. We are still grappling with basics when it comes to providing safe spaces and acknowledging 'you matter' and providing a hand to nudge support & rise. We have umpteen everyday opportunities to make a difference and #Investinwomen’, to find 'her' voice, to enable and empower at the grassroots level. I start at home and my community...one step at a time. Where would you start.
