Joram Niemans, during his research internship at MetaMeta, conducted a study in Mbooni Sub-County using an analytical hierarchy process to refine road water harvesting techniques. By ranking various biophysical and socio-economic criteria, he developed detailed suitability maps, pinpointing optimal sites for structures like mitre drains, farm ponds, and sand dams. This method combines local and expert knowledge, proving to be an effective tool for preliminary site evaluation. This tool enhances the effectiveness of our implementations by providing a theoretical foundation and reducing the time and effort needed for fieldwork. By identifying suitable locations for water harvesting, we aim to improve the design and management of water resources efficiently. We will continue to leverage this tool to further scale our activities 💪 Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) Global Resilience Partnership Government Of Makueni County | GOPA AFC GOPA Consulting Group #GreenRoadsforWater #GR4W #RoadWaterHarvesting

Thesis finished & internship started! This September I finished my master thesis titled "Food Choice Motives and Diet Quality amongst Pastoral Women of Reproductive Age in Isiolo, Kenya", which was awarded an 8.5. It was truly eye-opening to immerse myself in the world of pastoralism and the hardships that come with it. I am very grateful for the time I got to spend in Kenya, and I'd like to thank my dear supervisor Esther Omosa for making me feel at home. In Isiolo, I witnessed the impact of climate change on the nutrition, health, and livelihoods of marginalized communities. Engaging directly with these communities allowed me to see the urgency of these issues in real life, beyond what literature alone could convey. This experience deepened my commitment to contributing to a healthier, more sustainable food system. Now, in my internship with Transitiecoalitie Voedsel, I am grateful for the opportunity to work on the #ProteinTransition. The contrast between my research context—where livestock is life —and my current focus on reducing animal-based food consumption, including dairy, underscores a global paradox. This shift highlights the negative impact that Western dietary patterns, with their high animal protein dependence, can have not only on planetary health but also on food security in vulnerable regions. With this in mind, I’m especially motivated to address these issues back in the Netherlands. Working on sustainable solutions here feels both urgent and fitting, as we in the West bear a responsibility to address the challenges we’ve contributed to globally.

🌱🌿 Exploring Sustainable Agriculture at ZERI Greenhouse! 🌿🌱 Meet Alicia January, a 3rd-year Biochemistry student assistant at UNAM's Zero-Emission Research Initiative (ZERI), as she gives us a closer look at the exciting progress happening in the ZERI Greenhouse at Main Campus! From potatoes, spinach, onions, kale, to mustard plants, the greenhouse is thriving thanks to the dedication and hard work of our students and staff. Did you know that the potatoes harvested at the beginning of October were developed over 6 seasons from seeds originally sourced from South Africa and Ivory Coast? Dr. Lydia Horn, ZERI Coordinator, and her team are working tirelessly to create a potato variety that can thrive under Namibian conditions. 🌍🥔 Our student interns play a vital role in this project, learning hands-on skills in sustainable food production and contributing to research that could impact local agriculture. We’re proud to be shaping the next generation of scientists and farmers right here at UNAM! 🎥 Watch the video to hear more! 📽️ #UNAM #ZERIGreenhouse #SustainableAgriculture #StudentInterns #FoodSecurity #Biochemistry #Namibia #PotatoHarvest

How do you establish a carbon footprint for every single food product globally? Here is a snapshot of what this would require: •Supporting all farmers, especially small-scale ones, in obtaining the necessary data. • Aligning measurement, calculation, and reporting standards and methods. • Ensuring data can be easily exchanged within and across industries. • Implementing a process for data quality assurance. • Preventing producers in low- and middle-income countries from being pushed out of supply chains. • And perhaps most importantly, reducing rather than increasing the administrative burden for the smallest supply chain actors, such as farmers and SMEs. All these and more building blocks for a global system of food product carbon footprints I explored during my three-month internship with the OECD Trade and Agriculture in Paris. My significant learning in writing (economically) for various OECD publications, interviewing industry experts, and organizing interactive workshops was made possible by the incomparable supervision of Koen Deconinck. Thanks for this! With this rich experience in my pocket, I am looking forward to resuming my master’s in Transnational Governance at the European University Institute in Florence. My OECD insights into sustainable food systems will undoubtedly enrich my future research and work in nature conservation and agriculture.

OVER 1,500 SEEDLERS: SNAU IMPLEMENTS A GRANT FROM THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC 🇨🇿 🖇 Saplings of tree and shrub species, provided for by a grant from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, were planted at the Sumy Technical College of SNAU. Planting saplings is one of the components of fruitful cooperation between MENDELU (Mendel University in Brno) and Sumy National Agrarian University (SNAU). For a long time, representatives of SNAU and Mendel University worked out ideas that could be implemented together. As a result, they received funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic for the implementation of the project “The social and ecological significance of urban green spaces from the point of view of the water cycle, changed by global climate change – cooperation in education and research between the Mendel University in Brno and the Sumy National Agrarian University.” The Czech side fully financed the grant for the implementation of the project to solve social and environmental problems. Funds were allocated for: internships for our students and scientific and pedagogical staff, research using the latest equipment, and most importantly, we participated in the selection of tree and shrub species adapted to the climatic conditions of the Sumy Oblast. PROUD TO BE PART OF THE WESTERN CAPE'S THRIVING AGRICULTURAL SECTOR The recently presented Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s Annual Report 2023/24 highlights the region’s incredible contribution to South Africa’s economy. Agriculture and agri-processing exports grew from R63 billion in 2018 to R104 billion in 2023. This growth strengthens the economy and creates much-needed job opportunities. Over 1 400 jobs were created through rural projects, and 235 unemployed youth benefited from internships and scholarships. As champions of the wine industry and beyond, we’re excited to continue supporting sustainable growth and innovation. 2wThis is wonderful. In behalf of the people of Sebei, thank you for committing, by way of research, to help farmers address the threat of unsustainable farming practices. Upon the completion of your internship, kindly consider an extension or even the possibility of launching another platform to extend your works. Eliakim and Dismas are a great resource. I'll be happy to be in the conversation. Blessings to you and the entire Aid Environment team
