The Test Conducted at at Eighteen project Islamabad Named Extension of Cluster-E The Field Density Test by Sand Replacement Method is a procedure used to determine the in-situ density of soil in the field. It involves excavating a small hole in the soil, filling it with dry, uniformly graded sand, and calculating the volume of the hole based on the weight of sand required to fill it. By comparing the weight of the excavated soil with the volume of the hole, the soil's bulk and dry density can be determined. This method is commonly employed in construction projects to assess the degree of soil compaction and ensure compliance with design specifications.

📍 Live from the construction site! 📍 Today, I visited our Bahria Enclave project where we're constructing an underground water tank with a capacity of 400,000 water gallons. In this video, I provide an overview of the site, discuss the ongoing work, and showcase the construction and structure drawings of the tank. You'll also see the cross sections of the retaining walls and the steel reinforcement we're inspecting. Key points to check during steel reinforcement inspection: 1. Alignment and spacing of steel bars. 2. Overlap and anchorage details. 3. Cleanliness and rust-free condition of steel. 4. Proper placement of stirrups and ties. 5. Adherence to design specifications and drawings. How did we conduct Building Integrity Assessment of a high rise construction at sea front of Karachi ⁉ 🔨 Due to rapid growth of population in Karachi we see rapid construction of buildings and high rises. The soil at sea shore is saturated with water and soil is prone to liquefaction. Due to high pore pressure dewatering is also difficult. After construction building foundation may effected by ground water. This ultimately effected the integrity of whole building and its service life reduces. ✏ Assessment project was compiled by the sequence of inspection, sampling and testing of concrete and steel in a following manner. 1- Concrete Core Extraction: more than 200 samples were extracted from foundation and basement columns, beams and roofs for lab testing. 2- Compressive Strength: is the capacity of concrete to withstand loads before failure. It depend upon cement content, water cement ratio, aggregates and curing. 3- Cement Content Test: by chemical method cement % of concrete can be estimated. This % if not match with design % than there are chances of concrete failure in terms of strength and serviceability. 4- Chloride % Test: CL in concrete can cause steel corrosion. Commonly if the amount is greater than 0.1 % near steel than active corrosion is present and the service life of structure is decreased. 5- Chloride Permeability Test: Salt containing water also have ability to rapidly pass thorough pores from surface to steel depth. If this value is higher than there is an indication that the pores are large and interconnected due to insufficient compaction or less cement. 6- Carbonation Test: Concrete may effect from external environment, which may cause its PH to change and due to reaction with chemicals steel start to corrode. 7 -Petrographic Analysis: a thin section is prepared from concrete cores and analyzed in petrographic microscopes. It can provide much information about quality of concrete such as Identification of distress, chloride-induced corrosion, carbonation, alkali-aggregate reaction, degree of cement hydration, estimation of w/cm and density (unit weight), evidence of sulfate and other chemical attack, and assessment of the cause of cracking. 8- Tensile Properties of Steel: sample cut from non-load bearing member and tested for tensile, yield and elongation provides information of steel strength and size in current conditions. 📀 In letter posts I will share some other examples of my experience about material and design related problems faced by our clients in Pakistan with possible solutions. Case history Catch-up – July 2023: RPC have manufactured, delivered and installed the 6th Glass Reinforced Polymer #GRP cascade shaft consisting of a 4.5m diameter x 24m deep, at Dundale NZ, for our customer Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture (GAJV), for the Watercare Services Limited Central Interceptor project in Auckland. This comprised two x 4.5m diameter cascade #GRP segments, 11.33m and 12.2m long, weighing 34 and 26 tonnes, respectively. A third unit, a 3m diameter control chamber, 7.7m long, weighing 7.7 tonnes, connects to the adjacent main GRP cascade shaft. In the top image you will see the massive units alongside the excavated shaft ready to be installed. In the second image you can see the first segment in-situ with Daniel from RPC Seven Hills and Michael Hannan from our contractor Pollock Cranes securing the segment. Off to the sides are the two 2.1m diameter sewer link connections. The cascade shaft structures were manufactured using GRP materials by RPC showcasing advanced engineering in underground infrastructure. GRP structures boast outstanding resistance to harsh environmental conditions, making them ideal for #sewage and #wastewater applications such as this. GRP structures also deliver exceptional strength and asset life, ensuring the structural integrity of the shaft over time. Their lightweight nature, compared with traditional materials such as steel and concrete, facilitates efficient installation, reducing construction time and costs.
