'Campanilismo' is one of those wonderful words that is hard to translate, but tells us a lot about a culture. The literal translation from Italian to English would be 'belltowerness' It means pride in your local bell tower and by extension pride in your city, town or village. Unified only in 1861, and a republic since 1946, Italy had been split into kingdoms, duchies, and city-states. Italian loyalty tends still to be stronger towards one's locality than the nation as a whole. One could call it parochialism, but that's too narrow a term with rather negative connotations. Thinking of the UK, pride in one's city tends to have become weaker, with a few exceptions - such as Brighton, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol and Manchester. How about where you live? Is there a powerful local culture, on a smaller scale than national or even regional? It's a layer that is sometimes neglected when we talk about culture. Manchester, near where I grew up, and where I worked for five years, was a mess for some decades, but has transformed itself since the 1980s, increasing local pride. We fix them together to improve our proficiency, including this one focusing on a real hotel notice for rules to follow that I saw on a trip once. We work together in this video to spot each error and what kind of error it is, discuss the fixes for each one, and the importance of reading the notice out loud to figure out where the errors are. What do pasta alla gricia, K-Pop and Hollywood all have in common? While only one of them was a great recommendation from one of our Italian students, they’re all examples of a country’s soft power. Soft power was defined by political scientist Joseph Nye Jr. as a country’s ability to influence others without resorting to coercive pressure, which involves states projecting their values across borders to foster goodwill and strengthen partnerships (search What is Soft Power?, Council of Foreign Relations, 2023). When thinking of Italy, Korea and the US, it’s natural to think of pasta, pop-music and cinema, respectively. These cultural items engender positive opinions of a country, leading individuals around the world to see such a culture as better, more friendly, and more attractive, leading to increased tourism, better relations and greater cross-cultural connections. It’s an extremely interesting and all-encompassing subject that we’ll be looking at in Week 2: Soft Power, of our English course: The International Community. If you want to improve your English competency, as well as applicable academic and professional skills such as persuasive writing and debating, join us in October!
