Support MS Research Funding in FY25 As an MS Activist and your constituent, I want to add my voice to the more than 1,000 MS Activists who are assembling as part of the National MS Society’s MS Activist Rally today to urge you to: - Support $20 million for the MS Research Program (MSRP) at the Department of Defense in FY25 (level funding); and - Support $51.3 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to allow for 7.5% increase to make progress against the wide range of diseases and conditions. Congress established the MSRP to fill gaps in MS research, education and care that benefit everyone living with MS. The high-risk, high-reward nature of MSRP funding gives researchers the flexibility they need to address urgent gaps and/or novel discoveries that could make an immediate impact for all people affected by MS. Nearly 70,000 American veterans live with MS and there is higher incidence of MS in military service members than in the general population. The NIH-funded basic research is crucial to unlocking scientific solutions – all current MS disease modifying therapies are a result of NIH-funded basic research. This week I attended the Shock Society annual conference in Palm Beach, FL. Other than hearing that NIGMS isn't just placing #sepsis experiments on mice & rats at low priority, but that they're no longer funding CLP, the "gold standard" rodent sepsis model (yay!), here are my takeaways: NIGMS isn't just pulling out of CLP, they're pushing investigators toward #humanrelevantresearch. The program officer who gave a talk cited the FDA Modernization Act & new NIH #NAMs initiatives as motivation, & expounded on ways that PIs can gain access to human samples. I saw great talks by physician-scientists Mihir Atreya & Andrew Lautz of Cincinnati Children's on the exciting work they're doing using #hiPSCs to study sepsis & critical illnesses. What would make this work more accessible? The consensus seemed to be that patient-specific samples need to be a shared resource & made more available. One researcher, in a disappointed tone, said he was developing mouse models because it’s so hard to get clinical samples. Patient heterogeneity is a huge issue in #criticalcare that some are trying to tackle by categorizing human "#endotypes." But... if individual humans vary so much from one another, how are we supposed to answer these questions using entirely different species?? What else? The Shock journal isn't on board with NIH's mission of making publicly-funded research #openaccess, afraid it will hurt the revenue they bring in from subscriptions. On the wrong side of history there, IMO. Lastly, critical care medicine is just super... cool! It was disappointing to see the overwhelming hold that experiments on animals have on the research, but there's a lot of potential here for making better use of human samples & data. 🤞

Should the National Institutes of Health be reorganized? What are the implications? Would the elimination of the National Institute on Aging be a setback to aging research? US Congressional House Energy and Commerce Committee proposed a framework for #NIH reorganization. Proposal is perhaps the first of many hearings, discussions, lobbyist calls & white papers. Could #NIA really be replaced with a new National Institute on Dementia? Proposal stirring the passions of key stakeholders- #patientadvocates, #longevity community members & #aging researchers. The nonprofit Healthspan Action Coalition #HSAC submitted a serious response to the Committee. We recommend that #healthspan considerations be mandated in grant applications-emphasizing that there's more to #aging than #neurologicaldiseases like #Alzheimer’s. The stated goal of the proposed framework is certainly meritorious- to streamline the NIH by reducing redundancies & formation of research silos. Our Coalition calls for a “holistic life stage perspective” in #biomedicalresearch, establishing collaborative regional research clusters to study interrelated layers of healthspan science. Any reorganization must take account of #AI- making the NIH more efficient. Our submission provides a context to understand the history of past NIH reorganizations & much more. Senate Bill Proposes Significant NIH Funding Boost for 2025: A new Senate bill aims to increase NIH funding, supporting the United States' position as a global leader in health research & innovation. Nothing new under the sun ? there is significant appetite in the new overwhelmingly democratically elected Trump(2) administration to reform the USA National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its US$47-billion research portfolio. What’s less clear is how this transformation will unfold; proposals have included everything from shrinking the number of institutes by half to replacing a subset of the agency’s staff members. Reflecting this increased scrutiny by the government, on 12 November, the NIH launched a series of meetings at which an advisory group of agency insiders and external scientists will consider the various proposals and offer its own recommendations for reforms. It will be a mad dash to the finish line among these parties in terms of whose vision will win out, says Jennifer Zeitzer, who leads the public-affairs office at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology in Rockville, Maryland. “There’s absolutely movement on Capitol Hill to discuss how to optimize and reform the NIH,” she says. “We now also have the agency participating in that conversation.” Shrinking and cutting? What for exactly? The NIH advisory meeting comes in the wake of Republicans winning control of both chambers of Congress and the White House for 2025. This year, two separate legislative proposals to reform the agency were put forward by Republican congressional members — one led by representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington State and one by senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana. https://lnkd.in/dsjMHkyN

Congressional plan to "reform" the NIH. The plan basically pulls $973M from four programs, NCATS, NIBIB, ARAP-H, and the Common Fund, and redistributes it to the other institutes. Those four programs would be combined into one new institute, the National Institute on Innovation and Advanced Research. The current number of X programs and institutes will be reduced down to 15. The institute that benefits the most is the NCI. It remains a free standing institute and gets a $581M boost to their budget. Only the NCI, NIMH, NIH Clinical Center, CSR, and CIT remain as they are. 👇🏽 Fantastic piece by Doris Duke Foundation's Sindy Escobar Alvarez & Sam Gill titled "Medicine Means More Than Molecules," which spotlights learnings from their own historical funding patterns, including a tough but important recognition that while their approach undoubtedly advanced valuable science, it also sidelined research critical to understanding how best to implement health services and treatments. They outline some important ways funders and academic institutions can promote research that boosts health and well-being including: 1) Organize funding around pressing health problems rather than career trajectories 2) Increase prizes, awards, and other honors attached to research for prevention and care implementation 3) More actively facilitate innovations that improve health outcomes and increase visibility/regard for work that improves care and disease prevention.
