Should you require an email address to download a case study? This is something that is a new debate for me, one that I have changed my mind on. For the longest time, I was a proponent of having people enter emails to get access to a case study. Capturing an email and being able to market to them is so important, but it does create a few barriers. I always had the data and thought behind it that if they were truly interested in our product, they wouldn’t mind giving their email.  And many do, you get some very qualified leads. But you also do lose some people who won’t give their email so they abandon your site altogether. Recently, I had the same tactic on my website. But it wasn’t working. People were clicking the button to view the case study according to HotJar. but no one was giving me their email. So I removed that option and downloads have increased. I also saw a post about a week ago from someone complaining about how SaaS companies make it difficult to get information. They require emails for case studies and booking demos. The person went on to say they just wanted the information and that because they made it harder to obtain, that startup lost the sale. The comments supported this stance big time. It got me thinking about my own experience and what others are saying. Maybe we all have email fatigue since digital marketing blew up substantially during covid. I know I unsubscribe from email lists daily just because it is too many emails coming my way. Moving forward, I am suggesting startups make it easy to access their case studies. If someone is clicking the button to download, they are doing their research. Make it easy for them to do their due diligence. There are other ways to capture emails later on. Here are 4 strategies B2B SaaS can implement in 2025 to significantly grow their MRR. 1. Split marketing budget 85/15 85% of the marketing budget should go towards 1 or 2 channels which are already working. You want to do more of what's working but have some budget for experimenting and long-shots. Unlocking an additional marketing channel with great performance is one of the most impactful things a business can do to significantly increase revenue. 2. Optimize the core funnel If you're new to the concept of the core funnel, check out this video - https://lnkd.in/d45Ebcwg. SaaS businesses should be obsessed with improving their core funnel. A few percentage point shifts in any of the main conversion KPIs in the core funnel will result in more money in the bank account. The most impactful way to improve the core funnel is by leveraging your data, interviewing users, consulting with UX experts, and experimentation. 3. Get obsessive about reducing churn A small reduction in churn often results in a significant increase in net MRR growth and LTV. This gives the business more resources to invest in support and product development which in turn results in lower churn. Draw up the top 10 reasons users churn, pick 3 and spend significant resources on improving in these 3 areas. Rinse and repeat every quarter and by the end of the year your churn will be down significantly. 4. Interview your power users Connect with 10 - 25 of your power users over video calls, or if possible, in person and conduct deep interviews. You want to understand the patterns in their usage of your product, their motivations, why they love your product so much, and why they chose your product over alternative options. Another key question to ask is: "If you could pick only one thing that we work on in 2025, what would it be?". This question helps get to the #1 pain point the user has with your product, or the one thing they wish the product did that it doesn't. If you ask enough power users this question, hopefully you'll start to hear similar answers. Put all your R&D resources into addressing these requests. Your power users are what make or break your SaaS. You want to build for them. Failure to define what proper outreach is costs companies MILLIONS in revenue every single year. Let me illustrate a scenario that I know is affecting tons of companies: Marketing spends $100,000+ on 6sense. The idea is to identify the companies that are searching for solutions to the problem they solve and reach out to them accordingly. So, they flag a bunch of companies as “Marketing Qualified Accounts” (MQAs), pass them over to Sales, and Sales handles the outreach from there. This goes on for months. Then, one day, the VP of Marketing realizes that one of their most promising MQAs has signed with a competitor. She digs into the account and her mind is blown: Sales only reached out to one contact… the one that filled out a form months before… three weeks *after* becoming an MQA. 🤯 If I were the VP of Marketing in this scenario, I’d be irate. At a bare minimum, we should’ve sent four emails to three contacts. And we should’ve done so RIGHT AWAY. The root of the problem here? We haven’t clearly defined the minimum behavior that qualifies as “prospecting.” And even if there were, how would we know if people were following it without manually checking ever MQA? The ability to pull a daily report that shows you MQAs that haven’t been properly addressed according to your definition of “prospecting” is absolutely critical. If you’re spending $100,000+ a year on a tool like 6sense or Demandbase and you’re *not* sending high-quality outreach to several contacts per MQA, you’re burning money… … and when you account for lost opportunities, that figure could be well into the millions.
