The flat recess on the shank of a milling cutter is known as a Weldon clamping surface. 💡 When a milling cutter with a Weldon clamping surface is inserted into a Weldon holder, it is held in place by screws in the housing of the chuck. The recess prevents the tool from coming loose during the milling process. In general, the use of Weldon holders is preferred for heavy-duty machining and ETC milling (trochoidal milling), because they guarantee torque resistance and a high level of protection against tool pull-out.
