The zebra effect explains why people often hesitate to stand out. This concept originates from an observation made by scientists studying zebras. During their research, the scientists lost track of individual zebras amidst the herd. To solve this, they marked one zebra with a red dot. Unfortunately, this marked zebra became the first to be hunted by lions because it was easy to spot during the chase. This illustrates the survival mechanics of zebras: being harder to track down makes it harder to kill. Interestingly, this phenomenon might explain why people are reluctant to think outside the box. It's a survival mechanism. The moment someone starts to be different from the herd, they metaphorically become the zebra with the red dot, attracting unwanted attention and potential hostility. However, this risk is often the cost of innovation. Thinking differently can lead to significant discoveries and advancements, but it can also attract criticism and opposition. Therefore, if you choose to stand out and innovate, ensure the potential rewards are worth the risk. #ZebraEffect #Innovation #ThinkingDifferently

As winter approaches, I’m reflecting on the ISSW 2024 conference in Tromsø, where I had the chance to present my bachelor’s thesis, “Learning on the Mountain: What Gets Our Attention and How Might Reflecting on That Change Our Ways.” 🏔️✨ My research looked into how surprising or unexpected moments in the mountains can lead us to reflect and, hopefully, change our behavior. 💡🔄 Avalanche courses are designed to teach safe backcountry travel, but there's been less focus on what participants learn long-term, how they reflect on it, and how they apply it afterward. My thesis asks a key question: Can avalanche courses, designed to encourage double-loop learning (reflective learning), help non-professionals develop stronger reflective practices? With more people venturing into the mountains, having solid safety education is more essential than ever. I’m advocating for avalanche courses that go beyond technical skills to also build reflective and soft skills—because these could play a role in preventing avalanche accidents. It’s time to rethink how we learn in the mountains. ⛷️❄️ Thank you for the inspiring days, the chance to present, and all the great conversations! 🙌🎉 I'm excited to be part of Tim Dassler’s PhD project—thank you. https://lnkd.in/dTqAQc8Z #CARE-Center-for-Avalanche-Research-and-Education Tim Dassler @Tove I. With the recent news of five years of funding from the Strategic Science Fund (SSF), MEOPAR is delighted to announce the launch of a novel program, Ship Time, to support Canadian leadership in ocean-going marine research. This program is designed to be fundamentally different in scope from the NSERC Ship Time program. Whereas the NSERC STP supports NSERC Discovery Grant holders and their individual research programs, the MEOPAR ship time program is intended to support multidisciplinary collaborations on very different scales. While we anticipate that some projects may leverage a complimentary proposal to the NSERC STP, eligibility for MEOPAR funding is greatly expanded under SSF, extending opportunities to researchers who may have had limited access to ship time funding in the past. If you’d like a program overview, information about calls for proposals, information on how this program will align with the SSF program and funding eligibility, visit our website. As noted in the overview document, the first deadline will arrive in early fall. https://bit.ly/3WIvvB0

$261 Million total Engineering and Research and Development $116 Million in Industry-Funded Engineering and Research and Development Making Wichita State University #2 in industry-funded engineering research and #13 in total engineering and research and development Over the last few years, I have visited Wichita State alone or with associates many times, and we always bring back to the educators and institutions we work with, the energy of what is happening up there in Kansas. But frankly, it is a hard sell to universities and hospitals -- a kind of, “show me the money” game. Well, there you have it. A noteworthy accomplishment that should make other higher education institutions take pause. https://lnkd.in/gR7bQssy #wichitastateuniversity #researchanddevelopment #industryfunded #highereducation #engineering #medicaldevices #aviation Rob Gerlach | Sabia Abidi | Netta Rapuano PA, MHS, MBA | Zeeshan Khan | Kunal Bijlani | Charlene Kiliszewski Zewski Corporation | The Zewski Report
In a recent national list, Wichita State was ranked No. 2 in industry-funded engineering research and development, a testament to our community's commitment to discovery. Read more about the ranking and other news from WSU in this month's Forward Together. Http://wsu.news/FTFeb24

Novel alternative methods (NAMs) are increasingly important in the Drug Discovery Journey 🔹 Majority clinical failures are due to lack of understanding of safety or efficacy in human systems 🔹 New breed of therapeutic modalities which REQUIRE preclinical human models for efficacy e.g. human immune modulators, gene therapies 🔹 FDA Modernization acts 2.0 & 3.0 & EU Continued policy setting in animal reduction. The need of established NAM Methods in line with regulatory requirement are essential. Read the Q&A with Julie Frearson, Charles River Laboratories SVP and Chief Scientific Officer the latest updates.
