🌍 Environmental Charges on Airline Tickets Becoming the Norm Lufthansa is leading the way with a new mandatory "environmental cost surcharge" on flights from the EU, the UK, Norway, or Switzerland starting in 2025. This move aims to address environmental costs, with surcharges ranging from €1-€7 for short- to medium-haul flights and up to €72 for first-class long-haul tickets. ✈️ Why This Matters: This is a significant step towards sustainable aviation practices, aligning with EU regulations for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and emissions trading schemes (ETS). These surcharges will help reduce the carbon footprint of air travel, which is essential for combating climate change. 📊 Looking Ahead: Other legacy carriers are expected to follow suit, making environmental surcharges a standard practice. Compliance with the 2025 EU blending rules for SAF is projected to add €17 million to Lufthansa’s fuel bill, underscoring the financial impact and commitment to sustainability.

Our action plan for decarbonization is worldwide. In Cambodia, Phnom Penh airport has successfully achieved the Level 3 ‘Optimisation’ of the Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme. This accomplishment confirms its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and actively involving third parties, such as airlines and various service providers, in carbon footprint management. Thanks to this global ambition, we are the first international contributor to the ACI's ACA program, with a total of 51 accredited airports, including four at the highest level, ACA 5, in Portugal and France. We hope that this leadership in sustainability efforts within the aviation industry sets a positive example for others to follow, encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly practices across the globe. 👉 To learn more: https://bit.ly/3w8tZ1E #PositiveMobility #VINCIAirports #ACA Cambodia Airports VINCI Concessions ACI World - Airports Council International Airports Council International - ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East

1-72 Euro surcharge for flights originating in the EU and UK beginning later this year as Lufthansa notes: “the airline group will not be able to bear the successively increasing additional costs resulting from regulatory requirements in the coming years on its own. Part of these expected costs for the year 2025 are now to be covered by the new Environmental Cost Surcharge.” It will be interesting to see the impact on ridership as many consumers, while very interested in value and service levels also have a price point which this announcement may impact.

Umm… EU regulations that come into force next year require airlines to use 2% of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Lufthansa have been using/testing SAF for sometime, and offering customers the opportunity to pay extra for it. Now they suddenly hike the price of tickets blaming environmental leglisation. One of three things is true - 1. The cost of meeting the legislation is vast - in which case they should share the evidence. 2. They are starting a PR war against efforts to reduce aviation’s carbon emissions. 3. They are profiteering and using the environment as an excuse. It would be good to know which.
