"More so than previous conflicts, such tools will be imperative in future fights where sophisticated adversaries will possess advanced electromagnetic spectrum capabilities designed to locate U.S. forces and jam their communications. In order to thwart these systems, the American military must have countermeasures against them. . .However, if soldiers encounter a signal not previously labeled or in their library, countermeasures can’t be developed." #forteisenhower #artificialintelligence #ai #ml #electromagneticspectrum #signal #signalsintelligence #sigint #army https://lnkd.in/e8JUhgSN

Competent and innovative technologists are crucial to the future of U.S. national security. The National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI) warns that a digital talent deficit at the Department of Defense represents the greatest impediment to the U.S. military’s effective embrace of emerging technologies. A new Digital Military Talent Initiative could help address the military’s digital-talent gap by providing an expedited path to U.S. citizenship through military service for noncitizen technologists aligned to NSCAI archetypes. Modernization of an already-existing DOD program and military enlistment policy updates could infuse digital talent by providing vetted noncitizens a pathway to accelerated naturalization through military service. ✍ Jordan Sun + James Long + Alex McLeod, MBA + Matthew Fitzgerald #DayOne2025 https://lnkd.in/ePySZxJk

How Tech Talent is Shaping the Future of National Defense Interested in joining the US Cyber Reserves? The U.S. Department of Defense is tapping into Silicon Valley’s top talents to revolutionize national security, launching a unique program to onboard tech leaders as part-time military reservists. This initiative isn't about trading keyboards for rifles; it's about elite technologists offering their expertise in cybersecurity, AI, and data analytics during weekend commitments, bridging the gap between private-sector innovation and public defense. Leading the charge is Brynt Parmeter, the Pentagon’s chief talent management officer, envisioning a future where CTOs and senior data professionals step into roles as uniformed officers, tackling crucial digital challenges. The shift in mindset is remarkable, as Silicon Valley shifts from hesitancy towards defense work to embracing it as indispensable, given the current global realities with China, Ukraine, and beyond. This program signifies a crucial shift in perspective: the recognition that future battles will be fought with algorithms, not traditional weaponry. It highlights the critical necessity for collaboration between the business sector and the government. As technology advances rapidly, attracting top-tier talent from the private sector is not just about filling skill gaps, it’s about safeguarding national security and maintaining global competitiveness. OpenAI makes a move! Appoints retired U.S. Army General to Board of Directors, to run Safety and Security committee. The reason for the appointment? Must be recent news like this one: "The Army awarded Palantir Technologies a $480 million contract to expand a data analysis and decision making tool to more military users across the globe. The Maven Smart System is part of Project Maven, the Pentagon’s marquis artificial intelligence program, which ingests and processes data from multiple sources, like satellite imagery and geolocation data, and uses it to automatically detect potential targets." My take: this is a move to sell security, first to the private institutions (the announcement mentions "hospitals, schools, and financial institutions"). And ultimately, sell to the military complex directly. The military is part of humanity, too.

Amos Fox, Ph.D., our Managing Editor, has another great essay on proxy warfare! “Proxy wars prolong conflicts and erode technological edges—states must weigh the cost of intervention against its long-term risks.” In this article Amos explains the strategic implications of technology diffusion in #ProxyWarfare.
