As the General Election approaches, we’re calling on all political parties in Westminster to stand behind the lifesaving work of air ambulance charities across the UK. Did you know that you may have local Prospective Parliamentary Candidates and party volunteers knock on your door to discuss why you should vote for them and their party? By using our suggested doorstep campaigning toolkit, you can effectively highlight air ambulance key issues with local candidates right at your doorstep, if air ambulance charities are close to your heart. Our four key issues that you can discuss are: 1. Access to, and Safeguarding of, Hospital Helipads and Community Landing Sites We want to ensure that all new and existing Major Trauma Centres and specialist hospitals in the UK have 24/7 accessible on-site helipads. We are urging Local Planning Authorities to develop a specialised safeguarding process to protect hospital helipads. We are aiming to ensure that air ambulance charities are involved in planning discussions about hospital helipads and community landing sites. 2. Increased Demand and Increased Cost Air ambulance charities are experiencing greater demand and higher operational expenses. It is crucial that the next UK Government supports them in obtaining UK-wide grants and capital funding to help them meet the growing demand and costs. 3. Safe Access to Patient Data To support air ambulance charities to continue to improve patient care and outcomes, we want to make sure they have safe and secure access to NHS patient data. 4. Statutory Levy for Lotteries We want the next UK Government to agree to a zero rate of statutory levy on lotteries and advocate for the continuation of voluntary contribution - recognising the unique contributions lotteries make to charitable causes. You have the power to help air ambulance charities to save even more lives and remain at the forefront of pre-hospital care. Every voice counts in calling for action. Join us in urging all political parties to commit to supporting the UK’s air ambulances. We’re excited to announce that eight NHS charities have successfully applied to join Cohort 3 of the Core20PLUS ambassador programme from our partnership with NHS England demonstrating their commitment to tackling health inequalities in their communities. The programme received over 700 applications from individuals across the NHS and voluntary sector interested in progressing work to address health inequalities in their communities. 💬 Chris Easton, Director of Strategy and Impact at NHS Charities Together, said: "It's wonderful to see these member NHS charities and their Trusts in England joining as ambassadors for the Core20PLUS programme for 2024-25. We hope this programme will continue to strengthen the incredible work NHS charities are already doing to address health inequalities in their communities, breaking down barriers so everyone can have equal opportunities to live healthily and improve their wellbeing." 💬 Beth Crackles, CEO at Sheffield Hospitals Charity and programme participant, said: "For me, being able to draw on not just what NHS charities are doing, but what other NHS Trusts are doing, and their learning in the health inequalities space, is so valuable. "I can’t wait to get going with the content, and sharing what we learn from our health inequalities work in Sheffield too." #NHS #Core20Plus

Air Ambulance charities are often asked: Do you fly patients to hospital? 🚁 Occasionally, when flying is deemed the quickest and most suitable method of hospital transfer, Air Ambulance charities utilise the helicopter for patient transportation. Air Ambulance charities often opt to transfer patients in ground ambulances. This allows the crew to maintain close monitoring and provide ongoing specialised care during the journey to the hospital. 🚑 #didyouknow #AirAmbulancesUK #AirAmbulances

It’s the middle of #TrusteesWeek and I’ve just learned the chancellors change to employers NI will add £200k to the exisiting large deficit at St Leonard's Hospice charity where I am a trustee. Before the budget, many hospices were already facing incredible financial stress - despite previous commitments from both government and NHS England to move to a fairer funding model. Hospices up and down the country will soon be going into budget planning for 25/26. Specialist palliative and end of life care is already patchy with inequitable access and growing demand. Most hospices already have large and growing deficits. Reserves will not last forever and were not donated to backfill what should be (and is defined in law) clear NHS funding responsibilities. Relying on commissioners to do the ‘right thing’ with the additional billions the NHS has received doesn’t give me much confidence. Some are great but others less so. Much less so. Past experience suggests clear instruction and ring fencing will be needed to get the money past other priorities and preferences within the system. The cliff edge many hospice charities were facing has just got an awful lot closer. Rt Hon Rachel Reeves Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP - please, do the right thing.

📢BREAKING NEWS📢 AXREM Supports the Heart Restart Tax Campaign to Scrap Defibrillator Tax AXREM is joining a coalition of leading first aid and cardiovascular charities and organisations in supporting the campaign to scrap the VAT on Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), a move that would increase affordability and save lives. The Heart Restart Tax campaign, led by the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA), brings together community groups, charities, businesses, and MPs to campaign for change. The campaign is backed by a range of organisations, including the British Heart Foundation, St John Ambulance, and the British Red Cross. Defibrillators are used to restart a person’s heart in the event of sudden cardiac arrest, and early treatment can increase survival rates to as high as 70% if defibrillation is given within three to five minutes of collapse. However, the median distance to an AED from the centre of any given UK postcode is over 700 metres—an average 19-minute walking distance there and back. #340b Hospitals’ Charity Care Rates Abysmally Low Pioneer Institute for Public Policy Research’s recent aanysis reinforces prior studies in concluding just how disappointedly low #charitycare rates are at 340B #hospitals. The 340B hospital charity care rate for 37 of 49 states reporting data, including all 4 states that have passed a contract #pharmacy law, have a #charitycare rate BELOW the national hospital charity care rate. Charity Care Overview: For all hospitals in the U.S., there is little to crow about. The highest year for charity care for all hospitals since 2011 was 4.11% in 2012. Charity care rates have fallen virtually every year thereafter, through 2022, when the rate fell to 2.28%, or a decline of 45%. 340B Hospitals Perform Even Worse: As bad as those all hospital rates are, the 340B hospital rates are much WORSE, despite those hospitals receiving billions in 340B subsidies: • A full 15 states have 340B hospital charity rates below 1%, with Hawaii being the worst of the worst at a laughable 0.27%. • 14 more states are above 1% but below 2%, including 3 of the 4 states that have passed contract pharmacy “protection” laws (Arkansas, West Virginia, and Louisiana). None of those states protects underinsured and uninsured patients by requiring 340B hospitals to provide at least the national average of charity care as a condition of their leveraging an unlimited number of CPs. • 4 states have 340B charity rates above 2% but below the national rate, including Virginia, the last of the 4 states to pass a CP law—also without any charity care requirement. The 340B program is extremely important, but this analysis shows that many 340B hospitals are not making a commitment to the #underinsured and #uninsured that is in any way commensurate with the enormous subsidies provided under this program. The program can and must do better.

It is wrong on so many levels
Exceptionally sad news just announced today by Forget Me Not Children's Hospice in Huddersfield. News came through just as Hugh Pym was finishing a story on precisely the financial headwinds buffering and menacing the sector. Despite their care service and charity being rated “Outstanding” by the Care Quality Commission in January, Forget Me Not get one of the smallest statutory (NHS) contributions of any hospice in the country. Only 10% of their total income requirement comes from the Governnent. Clearly this was not sustainable and so it has proved. So today Gareth Pierce MCIOF(AdvDip) and team have had to take the hardest decision any children’s hospice leadership team could face In order to reduce a £1m annual deficit delivering their children’s hospice care, up to 16 Forget me Not care staff now face redundancy. Huge sympathies to them As a result of this, short breaks and respite stays for children with life-limiting conditions will have to be reduced and further prioritised. Such a blow for the children and families in the Huddersfield area.

The recent guidance from the RCGP has created a crisis for Physician Associates across the UK, leading to unfair dismissals and contract breaches. Although this guidance is neither evidence-based nor legally binding, some employers have been misled into taking damaging actions that put jobs and patient care at risk. This is a deliberate challenge to our profession. UMAPs is taking a stand with a legal challenge to protect PAs, prevent further harm, and hold those responsible accountable. We urgently need to raise £30,000-£100,000 to fund this effort. Every contribution makes a difference in safeguarding the thousands of PAs working to support the NHS and secure the future of our healthcare workforce.
