In a significant move to bolster its financial position, Spirit Airlines has announced the sale of 23 Airbus A320 family aircraft. This decision comes at a crucial time for the ultra-low-cost carrier, which is navigating through financial turbulence and operational challenges. Spirit Airlines has entered into an agreement with GA Telesis, a company specializing in aircraft sales, leasing, distribution, and maintenance. The deal, valued at approximately $519 million, involves the sale of 23 older Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft. Deliveries of these aircraft are set to begin immediately and will continue through February 2025. The primary goal of this sale is to enhance Spirit Airlines' liquidity. The airline expects to gain around $225 million in liquidity through the end of 2025. This influx of cash is vital for Spirit as it aims to stabilize its finances and navigate through the upcoming winter season, which is typically challenging for airlines due to lower travel demand. #Airport #Airline #USA #SpiritAirlines #A320 #GATelesis #AviationIndustry #AviationOasis https://lnkd.in/eJ7h2nS7

POP QUIZ: Are more #aircraft leased or owned by airlines globally? #Airlines have a choice between buying their aircraft or leasing them. Leasing has emerged as the preferred option, rising from roughly 10% of the total fleet in the 1970s to 58% at the end of 2023. This most spectacular increase occurred between 1980 and 2010, and the share first crossed the 50% mark in 2004. In recent years, it has stabilized around the current 60% level, suggesting that this might be “the optimal” split between leasing and owning in the industry. American Airlines places orders with Airbus, Boeing and Embraer American Airlines announced orders for 260 new aircraft, including 85 Airbus A321neo, 85 Boeing 737 MAX 10 and 90 Embraer E175 aircraft. The orders also include options and purchase rights for an additional 193 aircraft. As part of the Boeing order, American has upgauged 30 existing 737 MAX 8 orders to 737 MAX 10 aircraft. The orders are part of American’s continued investment to expand premium seats across its narrowbody and regional fleets and support the long-term strength of the airline’s domestic and short-haul international network. “Over the past decade, we have invested heavily to modernize and simplify our fleet, which is the largest and youngest among U.S. network carriers, these orders will continue to fuel our fleet with newer, more efficient aircraft so we can continue to deliver the best network and record-setting operational reliability for our customers.” American’s CEO Robert Isom Since 2014, American has taken delivery of more than 600 mainline and regional aircraft. With this announcement, American has 440 aircraft on order, extending its aircraft order book into the next decade so the airline can continue to meet the growing demand for air travel. “We are very pleased to continue our longstanding partnerships with Airbus, Boeing and Embraer with these orders, as we look into the next decade, American will have a steady stream of new aircraft alongside a balanced level of capital investment, which will allow us to expand our network and deliver for our shareholders.” American’s Chief Financial Officer Devon May Measured narrowbody fleet growth The aircraft orders support American’s measured growth into the next decade and smooth the delivery schedule in the coming years. Accounting for these orders, American expects to remain within its previously announced guidance for capacity and capital expenditures. For the past decade, the A321 and A321neo aircraft have flown American’s customers across the U.S. and to short-haul international destinations. American continues to be the largest single-carrier operator in the world of A320 family aircraft. “The continued investment in the A321neo is a testament to the unprecedented value of the world’s most versatile and capable single-aisle aircraft, for nearly two decades, American Airlines has used its A320 family of aircraft, some of which have been produced in the U.S. in Mobile, Alabama, to grow its domestic and short-haul international network and provide an exceptional experience for its passengers and crews.” Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales, Commercial Aircraft, Airbus American is planning for the future with the new order of 737 MAX 10s and looks forward to certification of the aircraft. The airline currently operates the 737 MAX 8 and the addition of the 737 MAX 10 will allow American to continue to upgauge its fleet and provide more flexibility across its network. “We deeply appreciate American...

UPDATE TIME (AVIATION) ✈️ Germany's Lufthansa, one of Europe's most renowned airlines, has announced a restructuring plan to retire all of its Airbus A340-300, A340-600 and Boeing 747-400 by 2028. The move is part of a turnaround program aimed at reducing the complexity and operating costs of its large aircraft fleet. As reported by Swiss newspaper CH-Aviation, Lufthansa currently operates 17 A340-300, 17 A340-600 and eight 747-400 aircraft, all of which it owns. In addition to these, the company also owns nine A330-300s, while its leisure-focused subsidiary, Discover Airlines, operates three A330-200s. However, at the time of going to press, Lufthansa had not confirmed whether the A330-200s operated by Discover Airlines would also be withdrawn from service. Lufthansa still has outstanding orders for 21 B777-9s, seven B777-8Fs and 34 B787-9s with Boeing. The arrival of these aircraft as planned is crucial to modernizing the fleet and improving the company’s economic viability. In summary, the decision to phase out the A340 and B747-400 models by 2028 marks a significant effort by Lufthansa to simplify its operations and reduce costs as it prepares to face an increasingly competitive aviation market. Founded in 1926 as Deutsche Luft Hansa, on January 6, 1953 it changed its current name to Deutsche Lufthansa and its main hubs are the airports of Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Zurich (for Swiss), Wien (for Austrian), Bruxelles (for Brussels) and other hubs such as Berlin-Brandenburg, Hamburg, Köln-Bonn and Stuttgart. The company's headquarters are in Köln, North Rhine-Westphalia. When combined with its subsidiaries, it is the second largest airline in Europe in terms of passengers carried, after Ryanair, an ultra-low-cost airline, the largest in Europe and the fourth largest in the world in terms of revenue. [Everybody is too scared to fly Boeing 737 so airlines have to replace it with alternatives.] With the busy summer travel season in view, carriers say they’re trimming schedules and looking for alternatives to 737s they’ve already ordered, while also contending with issues afflicting narrowbodies from Airbus SE. Even Boeing seems uncertain when the planes will be ready as an army of US inspectors sift through its factories, meaning the company can’t make any firm predictions when things might return to normal. “All they’re saying is as you’d expect: ‘We are working as hard as we can. We are sorry for your disruption. We’re doing the best we can,’” said John Plueger, chief executive officer of aircraft leasing company Air Lease Corp. “‘As soon as we have certainty, we will advise you.’ They are saying that.” Airbus, Boeing’s main competitor, is largely sold out through the end of this decade, so there isn’t an obvious place for airlines to turn. Like Boeing, the European planemaker has been struggling to raise production back to pre-pandemic rates. A separate engine-wear issue has grounded hundreds of Airbus planes, further denting aircraft availability at a time when demand from airlines is particularly hot. https://lnkd.in/gdxXQqsE
