JAY-Z and SENERNA WILLIAMS Backed Coffee Chain is Entering India> This is the story of Indonesian coffee chain which started with a single coffee stall in 2017 is now worth more than $1 Billion with more than 800 locations across Southeast Asia. In 2017 Edward Tirtanata with his friend James Prananto invested a total of $15000 in their first grab-and-go coffee shop located in Jakarta. This model allowed them to ditch the costs of renting and designing a sit-down coffee space instead invest that money into quality ingredients. The credit for their rapid growth and popularity goes to the 3 approaches that they followed: 1) Grab-and-go model:- Instead of focusing on the sofa or the fast wi-fi they focused on providing an affordable high quality cup of coffee. 2) Tech-enabled Business:- The brand leveraged technology to optimize store operation and increase customer retention. Customer can order through their app for pick-up or delivery. 3) Hyperlocal:- A Kopi Kenangan latte in Indonesia will taste different from the latte in Singapore. This led to a faster adoption of their product among the locals. After capturing major markets of Southeast Asia Kopi is entering India. It will be interesting to see how they compete with Indian brands like abCoffee and First Coffee. #marketing #coffee

FMCG distribution in an emerging market like Indonesia is far more challenging then in a developed market. The main difference is the fragmentation. A country like the Netherlands will be a far more consolidated market then Indonesia, where the power is more with suppliers then with retailers still. Where in the Netherlands you have 3 major buying groups for supermarkets (Albert Heijn, Jumbo and Superunie) in Indonesia you have local heroes in every city and you can survive perfectly by supplying the 2-5 million General Trade outlets vs. the 40-50 thousand modern trade outlets. More hard work for sales people to knock on all those doors but it also means you are not locked out of the market with zero distribution if you get a no from a large buying group. Of course in the Netherlands you can still go directly to Superunie member chains and franchisees are also allowed to buy 3-10% of their assortment outside of their own group but suffice to say it's so hyper-competitive by now that you end up with the need to put in a lot of effort to get into 1 single store. Indonesia still has a retail landscape ready for disruption and although you see awesome new concepts enter where they try to look less at back margin support and more at whether a product will actually have a chance to gain traction quickly, you see the sheer size of this 270+ million population country is a guarantee for opportunities to gain distribution fairly easily. Both in the major cities and the peripheral areas where "small cities" can still have over a million people living in them. One other difference is the ease of which you can enter the market. The Netherlands has a fairly straightforward process for UMKM (SME) sized companies where you produce, put the ingredients on it in Dutch, an address for complaints and you follow a HACCP type hygienic code to ensure you do not mix food or beverage flavours in an old paint tin ;-) Indonesia has a large set of burning hoops to jump through for imported goods but UMKM can self declare with their P.irt certification which is relatively inexpensive to set up and allows small manufacturers to sell their products in both modern and general trade channels as well as horeca. HGA Group - retail learns from Indonesia. Indonesia, officially the Republic of Indonesia, is a country in Southeast Asia and Oceania between the Indian and Pacific oceans. It consists of over 17,000 islands, including Sumatra, Java, and parts of Borneo and New Guinea. The current population is c280 million – with a median age of 30 years. About 25 % of all retail is formalised. GDP growth will be c5% this year. Private consumption is anticipated to be the primary driver of growth in 2024. Whilst not as large a market as India, retail is certainly growing – I have met a retailer who will open multiples of hundreds of stores in Indonesia in 2024 and are now developing retail in South East Asia.
