Catching up on interesting news for new #legalindustry professionals. In recent years new polls are coming out with different sample sizes stating that law schools are more focused on 'transactional processes' rather that practical knowledge of the profession. Having a rub shoulders with some fantastic legal professionals over the years I am very interested to hear our #legal #lawyers #attorneys #paralegals #legalassistants perspective on this topic. A new aspect is that Covid also played a role a diluting the education process due to the lack of face-to-face interactions that are vital to personal/professional development in law schools.

Hello Readers! Today, I wanted to share with you the thought process of a younger Shubham as he stepped out from under the watchful aegis of school into the real world. I have, ever since I was 13 years old, dreamed of becoming a lawyer. The rationale I was frequently given by friends and family was “You debate well. You could be a lawyer.” And the slightly less charitable “You argue a lot. Make money off of your skills!” Little did I know then, that working in law was so much more than debating or arguing passionately about personal beliefs that you held. When I was 16 years old, I enrolled in a class that trained young people to get into law schools of their choice. I was first introduced to the world of Contracts and Torts and National Law Universities and everything else that came along with being an aspiring lawyer. I learnt of the Constitution, the Constitutional Assembly, and the brilliance of our original lawmakers and founding fathers. And then, once I actually went to law school and stepped into the real world of law through countless internships, I further learned that the academia of law had little to do with the daily rigour of working in Courts and in Litigation. Indian Courts focus on procedure over everything else. In fact, a LOT of cases, more than you might think, are lost on matters that may seem trivial like non-joinder of parties, incorrect jurisdiction etc. These become exceptionally important to understand whilst filing. So if I had to give young lawyers any single piece of advice: Do not focus on just the (pardon my French) sexy, glamorous laws! Focus on procedural laws too: The CPC and the new Criminal Laws are exceptionally important to understand, and that’s why my team has also written about them recently in research papers that you can read in our series called the Beagle’s Bugle, available on www.bombaylegalbeagle.com I wish someone had come to me in my first year of law school and told me this, and thus I am telling you this. It would’ve saved me immense amounts of time as a full fledged lawyer when, after not having this introduction to the law, I was forced to go back to the basics and peruse the Procedure Codes and understand them fully. And I assure you, your Clients will be thankful to you for it. As always, we here at Bombay Legal Beagle have you covered for all your legal needs!
