We’re living through an age of biodiversity loss as well as the climate crisis 🦏. COP events are in place to help find solutions and COP16 Colombia has just concluded, under the banner of ‘Paz con Naturaleza’, which more or less translates to ‘Making peace with nature’ 🕊. That sounds sensible and it was a fitting venue as Columbia is the most biodiverse country in the world for some flora and fauna, like orchids and birds. We’ve summarized the key outcomes, and also some of the stumbles, in this video: Here are a few quick points if you don’t fancy watching the movie: 📢 A belated voice has been given to indigenous communities, in negotiations. 🌊 Important marine areas can now be mapped in a standardized way. 🍄 Funga looks set to get the same recognition as Flora and Fauna. 💸 Sadly, funding for the global south remains stalled. Confused about all these COPs? Bear in mind that the biodiversity COPs (CBDs) are distinct from the Climate COPs, of which COP29 Azerbaijan starts next week. You’ll be hearing from us about that quicksmart… #COP29 #COP16 #biodiversitycrisis

The latest COP16 on Biodiversity is underway, with COP29 in Azerbaijan not far behind. It’s hard not to feel disillusioned when private jets fly in to discuss cutting carbon and oil lobbyists outnumber Indigenous peoples by 7 to 1. But these events remain the biggest global stage to highlight the destruction being caused, and our love for this planet means we continue to turn up and stay galvanised and inspired to protect her and all her inhabitants for many generations to come. That’s why, this year and every year, we stand with women and local and Indigenous communities in advocating for their essential role in climate action. Those least responsible but most affected by climate change, who successfully protect over 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity, yet are still all too often left (or priced) out of the discussions. Our projects ensure that funding and decision-making return to local hands. And this isn't just because its the right thing to do. Research shows that grassroots initiatives, driven by local knowledge and experience, lead to more effective conservation strategies. By supporting these voices, we can far better meet biodiversity goals while honouring the wisdom of those who have cared for the land for generations. Together, let’s amplify their impact and protect our planet! 🌍💚 Learn more at treesisters.org #COP16 #COP29 #TreeSisters #Indigenous #Communities #ClimateAction

Me calculating how much more COP we need to take action. Honestly, I have a tense relationship with the biodiversity & climate COP (ergo my dark humor here) Ever since finding out about the Aichi Targets ↪ Global biodiversity targets from 2011-2020 ↪ we missed almost all I lost quite a bit of trust in these conferences & their 2030/2050 targets. ☝️BUT I also have very limited knowledge about the COP & have never attended one. So I invited someone that has a clue. Peter Bridgewater is a veteran of international biodiversity discussions. 🐋 Tonight at 7p.m. here on Linkedin we will chat about the COP16 (Biodiversity COP) ‧ Why they matter ‧ What to expect from them ‧ What not to expect from them ‧ What's going on in Cali right now ‧ Why we should turn our backs yet ‧ How we all can play our part in reaching global targets 👉 Join us if you have some gaps, like me (event link in the comments) P.S. What is your perspective on the COPs? Useless time waste or crucial gathering to mobilize? Or something inbetween? #biodiversity #nature #environment #COP16

THE ROAD TO COP 16 🌵 Biodiversity forms the foundation of life on Earth, supporting the global economy, helping to fight climate change, and maintaining the food systems that feed the world. 🌵 However, we are facing an unparalleled crisis: habitats are disappearing, and up to a million species are at risk of extinction, endangering the lives and livelihoods of billions of people who rely on them. 🌵 For COP16 to the Convention on Biological Diversity, which will take place in Cali, Colombia, from 21 October – 1 November, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Nations will aim to transform the commitments to the Global Biodiversity Framework, agreed in 2022, into actionable plans. 🌵 Over the next few weeks, we will be tracking South Africa’s participation at COP16 and highlighting steps the country is taking, and needs to take, to meet these critical targets. #biodiversity #COP16 #lawfornature

🌱 Another Step Towards a Greener Future! 🌳 On 30th November 2024, I had the privilege of planting a jackfruit sapling at my educational institution, a small yet significant step toward creating a sustainable environment. 🌍✨ Trees are nature's gift, offering shade, oxygen, and sustenance while combating climate change. This sapling not only symbolizes growth and hope but also strengthens my commitment to protecting our planet. Every tree planted is a promise to future generations—a promise of clean air, biodiversity, and a greener tomorrow. Let’s all take the initiative, no matter how small, to contribute to a healthier Earth. Together, we can make a big difference! 🌿💚 #TreePlanting #ClimateAction #Sustainability #GreenFuture #Environmentalism #EkPedMaKeNaam #COP29 #COP16 COP29 Azerbaijan COP29 Life COY19BAKU UN Climate Change Bhupender Yadav SAVE & PLANT TREES!

🌍 From Biodiversity to Climate Action 🌱 With the momentum from COP16 on biodiversity a few weeks ago, now it’s time for COP29 in Baku to take center stage for climate action. Although COP16 in Colombia highlighted a $163 million commitment toward nature’s recovery, it fell short of the $200 billion needed annually to protect 30% of the world’s land and seas by 2030. One promising development was the approval of a voluntary mechanism for large companies to pay for the genetic resources they use – a step toward greater private sector involvement in biodiversity. Now, as COP29 begins, I’m eager to see how countries will work to finance the critical transition to a low-emitting economy. Let’s hope for strong commitments that push us closer to a sustainable future. 🌎💼 #COP29 #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Biodiversity

“There is an urgency around the world right now to meet these crises… to say, ‘how did we get here?’ That means a really deep examination of how we do everything. And the circular economy is asking those questions.” Janine Benyus, Biomimicry 3.8 and The Biomimicry Institute The #circulareconomy is a system in which materials never become waste and nature is regenerated. As COP29 Azerbaijan talks continue in Baku, find out how it can help tackle #climatechange and other global challenges, including biodiversity loss and pollution. ARE YOU AWARE THERE'S STILL ONE FINAL COP HAPPENING NEXT WEEK? The UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) is not the only COP. This convention was sandwiched between other two global COPs: The UN Biodiversity Conference COP16, which took place in October, and the UNCCD COP16 on desertification and land degradation, happening next week. We think these three COPs should be better linked. Why? 🟢 Climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, water scarcity, desertification, and food insecurity, are all interconnected (!) You can’t effectively tackle one without addressing the others.🙅🏽♀️ 🟢 The solutions we need, MUST work across these systems—bringing cross-cutting benefits to nature, communities, and businesses. ⚒️ 🟢 A holistic, integrated approach is the only way forward. It’s not just about reducing carbon emissions but about creating a resilient, thriving future where ecosystems and societies flourish together. 🌅 So, here's what we propose: ❌ Let's stop viewing climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation as separate crises. ✅ Instead, let’s implement integrated, bottom-up solutions - like holistic landscape restoration - that are more cost-effective and create positive impact for all beings. Want to hear more? Watch our colleague Lily M. speak alongside Paul van Zyl, co-founder of The Conduit, and Tessa Vincent at Race to Zero on a recent Weber Shandwick panel about COP29 climate communications. #HolisticThinking #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #IntegratedSolutions #COP29 #NatureBasedSolutions

Today at #COP29, IUCN made its intervention at the High Level Segment, as the voice of nature. We reminded the world that the window to limit global warming to 1.5°C is rapidly closing, with serious consequences for both people and nature. Alarming data such as from the IUCN Red Lists show that 44% of warm-water coral species are now at risk of extinction, and 50% of global mangrove ecosystems face collapse by 2050. We know that this precious planet provides us with everything we need for our survival, so countries must phase out fossil fuels rapidly and equitably, and protect and restore #nature. Here at COP29 – the #Finance COP – the stakes couldn’t be higher. We must leave Baku with a strong New Collective Quantified Goal that enables scaled-up action on mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage. Equally, finance must prioritise nature, Indigenous peoples, local communities, and the most vulnerable. It must also be gender-responsive. The climate crisis is also a fight for human rights – the rights of millions of people to a healthy #environment, housing, cultural preservation, and ultimately, to life itself. This is a call for #unity and rapid action. Stronger cross-sector collaboration, finance and intergenerational synergies are needed – and needed now – to turn the tide on climate change. We must act now – the world is watching.
