The highly digestible summary of the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) 2024 report on the state of the #information ecosystem is out! (see link in comment section): 🔸 The unchecked power of #socialmedia platforms pose a grave risk to the health of our global information environment. 🔸 #GenerativeAI has offered novel opportunities to produce propaganda / disinformation at scale. 🔸 What we can do to counter these threats: ▫ Support free and independent #media ▫ Implement digital literacy campaigns ▫ Encourage fact-checking ▫ Support labelling of misleading content And I would add: develop and enforce legislation such as #DSA to regulate social media platforms. One of the objectives of the AIfrica Conversations was participating at the global IGF and contributing towards the discussion on AI governance, voicing African voices and African needs and priorities. Dr. Sabine K. Witting, Adv. Lufuno T Tshikalange C-CIO(SA) / Outstanding Woman in Tech and Melody Musoni, PhD have been active members of the AIfrica Conversations! During the panel discussion, Adv. Lufuno T Tshikalange C-CIO(SA) / Outstanding Woman in Tech shared the exciting developments on AI governance in Africa. She spoke about the adoption of a continental AI Strategy which has a strong focus on growing a vibrant AI ecosystem within the continent, the continental data policy framework and its role in unlocking the value of data and the Malabo Convention aimed at protecting personal data. The panel also emphasised the role of global geopolitics and how it is shaping the future of AI governance. South Africa and the African Union having a unique and strategic position to advance AI governance through the G20 as South Africa heads the G20 Presidency in 2025. At the recently concluded China-Africa Summit, China made commitments to support African countries on AI governance and this is amid the ongoing digital competition between the USA and China which may also result in different approaches to AI governance in Africa.

What a great panel discussion today led by Melody Musoni, PhD, and Tech Legality's Dr. Sabine K. Witting, with Jenny Domino (pictured)! The panelists discussed AI Governance in the Global South, noting how the risk-based approach (emanating form the EU and also likely to be followed in Asia) needs to centre risks to rights holders, and to build in accountability mechanisms and remedies for users where rights are violated. In many countries in Africa and other parts of the world basic internet infrastructure is still lacking, and internet shutdowns are frequent, so these underlying weaknesses in the system need to be addressed at the same time as addressing AI regulation. Also online and not pictured on the panel were Gianclaudio Malgieri and Adv. Lufuno T Tshikalange C-CIO(SA) / Outstanding Woman in Tech #humanrightsandtechnology #aiethics #airegulation #humanrights

Explore our new policy brief on "Artificial Intelligence for Electoral Administration: A Pathway for Africa-EU Partnership", authored by Melody Musoni, PhD (ECDPM) and reviewed by Chloe Teevan (ECDPM), Dora Meredith, (ODI Global) and Raquel Jorge Ricart (Elcano Royal Institute). In an era of rapid digital transformation, our research unveils critical insights for leveraging AI in African electoral processes. 🗳️ The brief argues that digital evolution is not just desirable—it's urgent. Most African Election Management Bodies currently rely on outdated manual systems, creating significant barriers to technological innovation. 🗳️ Key highlights include the imperative for comprehensive capacity building, proactive voter education, and strategic private sector engagement. The authors offer a collaborative roadmap for responsible AI adoption that bridges African and European expertise. Developed in the framework of our partnership with the Stiftung Mercator GmbH . 📄 Access the full policy brief on our website. https://bit.ly/3Os0v4D

I first came across Petra Molnar's work at Concordia University's Data Justice Hub workshops in 2023. In her new book, The Walls Have Eyes, she consolidates six years of research about migration management technologies, and the private, state and NGO actors that have vested interests in embedding AI / automation into them. Crucially: how can those on the receiving end of these technologies - often fleeing violence and persecution - meaningfully give consent to the use of their data, when the alternative is not having access to shelter, food and aid if they do not comply? https://lnkd.in/eZPVtgvm
