A free and independent press is crucial for a functioning democracy and a healthy society. It can hold government officials, institutions, and private entities accountable for their actions by exposing misconduct, corruption, and abuse of power and it can act as a watchdog to ensure widespread transparency. On World Press Freedom Day, we acknowledge the fundamental role journalism plays in addressing the global crisis from conflict zones, human rights violations, and environmental challenges. This day serves as a reminder of the essential nature of their work—illuminating injustices and holding powers accountable. We're reminded of the ongoing struggle to protect press freedom against censorship, intimidation, and violence. Since 1993 more than 1,668 Journalists have been killed globally while carrying out their duties. In 2023, 68 journalists had been killed covering the Israeli-Gaza war alone, accounting for 72% of all media deaths worldwide that year. To ensure freedom of expression and the safety of journalists worldwide, the United Nations General Assembly designated May 3rd as World Press Freedom Day in 1993. The Organization condemns and monitors judicial follow up to every journalist killing and works with governments to develop supportive policies and laws, and raises global awareness through events such as World Press Freedom Day. In today’s digital age, IN2 navigates modern communication methods across a diverse range of platforms with a keen focus on truth and transparency in rapidly changing areas. We prioritise press freedom and acknowledge its impact on communities. #WorldPressFreedomDay #PressFreedom #PositiveChange

What would happen if you could not voice your opinions freely? Can you imagine the frustration of not being able to speak your truth? The right to information and the freedom of speech are two of the fundamental pillars of a democracy, and what happens when these two don't exist is chaos. In 1993, the United Nations declared 3rd May as Press Freedom Day - highlighting the importance of freedom and a chance to honor journalists working tirelessly to keep the public informed. The day is a reminder of the challenges journalists face around the world, such as censorship, threats, and violence for doing their job -which is voicing the truth. As an honest and unbiased publication, we understand the challenges our fellow journalists face in bringing out the truth, and we strive for a world where journalists can report freely without fear of reprisal and where the press remains a medium of truth and accountability. Here's to continued transparency and press freedom! . . . #pressfreedomday #worldpressfreedomday #freepress #press #journalism

On #WorldPressFreedomDay, we find ourselves at a particularly critical moment: Attacks on press freedom and #CivicSpace continue to threaten our democracy, both at home and abroad. Since 1992, 2186 media workers have paid the ultimate price in direct connection to their work—a sobering reminder of the perils faced by those dedicated to speaking truth to power. Reporters like The Wall Street Journal's Evan Gershkovich, who has faced intimidation, harassment, and unjust detention for simply doing his job as a journalist in #Russia, and Vladimir Kara-Murza, who has survived multiple poisoning attempts and has been imprisoned since April 2022 for speaking out against the war on #Ukraine, symbolize the dangers #journalists confront merely for doing their jobs. The incidents in Russia are not isolated; they echo a broader trend of escalating risks faced by journalists worldwide. In 1961, my father pointedly chose to give his first speech as Attorney General to the American Society of Newspaper Editors. “In a world where peace is our great endeavor and where we are fighting continuously for the good will of all mankind, it is tremendously important the American public get an accurate picture of what is happening,” he said. “And I don’t know of any better way than by newspapers digging into the government, finding out what is going on, and reporting it accurately.” The challenges faced by journalists not only endanger individual reporting but also erode the fundamental right to #FreeSpeech and access to information. Journalism is not a crime, and the relentless attacks on press freedom must end NOW! #ProtectOurJournalists
