One recent example below - Yesterday, I was halfway into this movie on Apple TV, when suddenly there is a pop up that tells me I need to buy this movie! Then, Apple asks me to pay up to finish the remaining of the movie. There was no indication of the need to buy/rent when I played it and watched it for almost an hour. It may be a dark UX pattern (less likely) or an untested edge case where movie availability was updated in between of playback (more likely). But, it has definitely eroded trust. I would think twice before starting another movie on Apple TV- without knowing if it will allow me to finish it before asking for more money.
Thank you for sharing this, Animesh! It’s always insightful to see perspectives like yours, whether celebrating success or addressing challenges.
My guess is it is a dark pattern like all of things on digital apps!
