We’ve all seen the statistic – more than 1 billion people worldwide suffer from uncorrected refractive error. There are many organizations out there doing great work to meet the desperate need for free and low-cost eye exams and eyeglasses. But, there’s one – Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) – that is meeting not only the immediate need that exists for exams and glasses but is also providing long-term solutions by addressing the root cause of the problem of preventable blindness – the dire shortage of optometrists in undeveloped and developing countries. The organization raises money from optometrists and others in our industry to fund an annual grant program. Since its inception, the organization has funded projects that have served 8 million patients in 47 countries. It has also helped establish 14 optometry schools and trained more than 14,000 optometrists and allied health professionals to treat patients in underserved parts of the world. To date, OGS has awarded more than 200 grants totaling more than $23 million. Learn more about the great work that OGS makes possible, and see what projects the organization just announced it will fund this year. https://lnkd.in/gUXt7DqQ #partner — with Optometry Giving Sight

🕰️ Eye On History: October 30, 1879 🕰️ On this day, Dr. Henry Willard Williams delivered a landmark lecture at the Massachusetts Charitable Eye and Ear Infirmary about the critical importance of early intervention in treating eye diseases to prevent #blindness. 👀 Why It Matters: Early detection and treatment are key to preventing vision loss. Research supports that timely intervention can prevent up to 90% of blindness caused by conditions like diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Williams' early advocacy set the stage for modern preventive eye care practices. 📊 The Impact of Vision Loss: Approximately 12 million Americans aged 40 and over currently have vision impairment, with this number expected to double by 2050. The economic burden of untreated vision loss exceeds $35 billion annually in the U.S. alone, highlighting the necessity of early detection and regular eye exams. 🤝 In what ways does your practice prioritize early detection and prevention? #eyecare #ecp #eyecareprofessionals #opthalmology

📣 Calling on All UK Professionals/Residents to Stand Up for FGM Survivors! As an FGM survivor, I have faced physical and emotional pain that no one should endure, but my journey has only fueled my mission: to ensure that the UK government and NHS recognise FGM survivors and provide us the basic medical rights we deserve. Today, I’m urging you all, especially UK residents, to sign and share my petition for meaningful change. For too long, FGM survivors have heard excuses: “There isn’t enough research,” “It’s not beneficial,” or even “It’s unnecessary.” But how can judgments be made by those who have no experience with our trauma, our pain? If Germany, France, Spain, and even Egypt can offer reconstruction surgeries to FGM survivors, then why not the UK? My surgery in Germany left me in debt, yet I pursued it because the UK’s failure to provide this care is intolerable. No one should be told they “don’t matter”—especially not after surviving one of the worst forms of violence. FGM survivors are mothers, daughters, professionals, and advocates. We demand the same medical options others receive. When we’re denied these rights, it’s a blatant disregard for our dignity and health. And if you’re a safeguarding professional, an activist, a human rights advocate, or simply someone who believes in equality, then know that this fight impacts all of us. ➡️ Sign the petition if you believe that every woman deserves access to necessary medical care. ➡️ Share this post to amplify the voices of over 130,000 women in the UK and the millions globally still at risk. Let’s be the voice for those silenced by ignorance. It’s time for the UK to catch up with the rest of the world. If we can offer surgeries for others, why can’t we offer reconstruction to FGM survivors? Why is our pain any less real? If you don’t support this, ask yourself why. We cannot afford to see FGM cases rise—we are here, we are hurting, and we need your support. Together, let’s demand justice, dignity, and care for all FGM survivors. Please sign, share, and raise awareness. ✊🏾 https://lnkd.in/gJPmB8-4

Did you know that 1 in 3 people globally live with uncorrected poor vision? 90% of these beneficiaries live in base of pyramid communities, where there is limited access to vision care, low awareness of the importance of eye health and a lack of trained optometry professionals available to provide essential vision care. Tele-refraction offers us the opportunity to bridge these gaps, allowing urban-based optometrists to extend their expertise to rural and remote areas, providing verified vision care services without the need for beneficiaries to travel far for in-person visits. In partnership with Dr. Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital, we jointly published groundbreaking clinical research in the peer reviewed journal, PLOS ONE, confirming that tele-refraction screenings conform to the gold standards of face-to-face eye exams. Tele-refraction allows us to enhance access to vision care for underserved populations living in base of pyramid communities. We look forward to integrating this model within new and existing partnerships with optometry associations and like-minded partners across the world, accelerating existing efforts to help people around the globe ‘see more and be more’.
