I have just had the honor and pleasure of reviewing the 2024 Bursary applications made by nautical students to the Vancouver Transportation Foundation and The Nautical Institute - British Columbia Branch scholarship. I am very impressed to see the quality and diversity in candidates beginning their careers at sea. Upon submission of my results I am left with the following thoughts: - Many people are choosing a career as a deck officer as a second or third career showing that the maritime industry is attractive to mature students looking for both a challenge and financial security. - The diversity in academic backgrounds, ages, life paths, ethnicity in applicants is broad showing that the adventure and opportunities from a maritime career appeals widely and that should be heralded by industry and the government as a success story. - That becoming a nautical officer in Canada is very, very expensive and cost may be a barrier to entry for many young people looking to enter the industry. It also may be a barrier for officers proceeding to the highest certificates that we require to manage a safe and successful industry such as Master Mariner and Chief Engineer. As Canada (and the world) has a huge shortage in skilled mariners, removing cost as a barrier should be of the highest priority of government and industry leaders. The National Shipbuilding Strategy should include serious funding for both the nautical colleges and for potential trainees to entice candidates into the industry. Even if a Nautical Sciences graduate does not stay at sea until they become a senior officer, the industry and the country will never lose their skills as many graduates will stay in affiliated shore based roles. With the MARITIME ARCTIC: Best Practice, Best Technology, Best People conference about to start in Victoria, some of the proceeds of which support this scholarship, it is shown that the maritime industry is a vibrant and challenging career choice in Canada and its growth should be encouraged by all.
