Today is the full Beaver Moon, named due to this time of year being the busiest for these hardworking builders. 🌕 As temperatures drop, Beavers are hard at work gathering food and reinforcing their lodges. Their efforts not only ensure their survival, but also contribute to healthier wetlands. 📸 Photo by Brandon Allen #BeaverMoon #FabPhotoFriday #AlbertaBiodiversity #BusyBeaver

Our native rowan (not necessarily with mistletoe) can be a great component of a neighbourhood's 'garden forest', complementing street tree planting. It establishes well on lighter soils to form a small to medium tree without deep roots. Tolerant of hot summers but not extended drought, it is most suited to northern and western Britain. This robust pioneer species has attractive foliage, flowers and berries and is important to a number of bird species. It has a rich folklore and many uses too. #trees, #gardendesign, #streetscape, #naturerecovery, #landscape

🦔 Friday 2 February celebrates #NationalHedgehogDay! Roman folklore predicts good weather and warmer days if one is seen in early February. 📅 In hindsight, this may not be a particularly reliable method of weather forecasting bearing in mind hedgehogs tend to hibernate until mid-March. However, they do periodically emerge to change nesting sites. 📉 Unfortunately, while they are one of the UK’s best-loved animals, they are in serious decline. Why not celebrate them by setting up a safe retreat or creating a hedgehog house in your garden and providing some hedgehog-friendly food and water! 🔗 Build a hedgehog house and provide a home to any garden visitors you may have. #wildlifeprotection #hedgehogs #doyourbit

The desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) is gorgeous choice for smaller yards. While many types of willow have invasive roots, the desert willow is actually a different species. It has non-invasive roots, and fairly compact proportions of up to 30ft tall and 25ft wide. ‘It makes a fantastic ornamental tree that blooms from spring to fall and is also drought tolerant once established,’ says Zander Caruso. The tree's fragrant trumpet-shaped flowers can be found in shades of pink, violet, and white. All have yellow throats. Desert willows are hardy in zones 7b through 11, and are ideal for planting in groups as a privacy screen or windbreak. They are easy to look after, requiring little pruning and only an occasional deep watering.According to experts this tree adds value to homes in Southern California:
