What a successful #TechBioUK event hosted by the BioIndustry Association (BIA)! 🙌 I attended for the first time this year and it was truly a remarkable experience. Kudos to BIA for delivering yet another exceptional event! 🥂 It was insightful to hear opinions from Directors, VPs and CEOs on the distinctions between Techbios and Biotechs: after 10 years of the growing TechBio industry, it's still not clearly defined! One thing is certain, Techbios are changing the trajectory of drug discover and in the Life Science Industry, 🔬 new businesses will have to consider how to apply tech to science more and more to improve probability of industrialising products in the future. 🧪🎇

Seventure Partners released a couple of days ago its 2023 review of the progresses in the microbiome industry. Excellent and inspiring read. The report however starts with what is hindering the speed of progress in the field: standardization and rigor in microbiome data (or lack thereof), driven among other factors by some of the shortcoming and limitations of sequencing. It is not surprising to see VC interested in the topic. After all, data quality and confidence in the results of (pre)clinical trials is of prime importance when guiding deep tech investment decisions. 💡 UbiquiTx, Inc. wins $275,000 award from National Science Foundation, National Science Foundation! This award is part of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I program. The project aims to develop a programmable modular therapeutic platform for the direct modification of proteins of interest via artificial intelligence protein engineering and mRNA as a therapeutic entity. This technology has the potential to advance the health and welfare of the American public and enhance partnerships between academia and industry. #SBIR #STTR #Healthcare 🔬 The project will focus on leveraging engineered enzymes to recognize and edit proteins of interest by removing/installing post-translational modifications rapidly and precisely. The goal is to expand the applications of the platform by designing and implementing new protein editors. 📆 This award is part of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I program and will last for 12 months, starting from July 15, 2024, and ending on June 30, 2025.

Synbiobeta last week was awesome! Maybe one of the best conferences I have attended. Not only were there talks by great scientists like Paul Stamets 🍄 and Craig Venter (picture below), but I reconnected with fermentation people at Genencor/DuPont/IFF, and BASF. Furthermore, I was able to meet many other innovators/service providers/investors during the conference. I feel very blessed to have spent two decades in this field. Although summarizing what I saw in bullet points is difficult, here it goes: • The conference felt very commercial in comparison to when it started, and not in a bad way. This is an indication that biotech has evolved over the past decade from the abstract or medical to the very practical. • The ecosystem is vibrant. There are many start-ups, service providers, innovators and investors from different countries all under one roof. To be candid, I was gladly surprised to see a couple of the Fortune 500 companies I worked for in the conference. • AI 🧠 is impacting everything including biotech. Although there are a lot of initiatives only time will tell which ones are the ones that will pan out commercially. Huge shout-out to Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc. and SynBioBeta for providing our start-up with a grant so that we could attend. I won't tag names, but building a start-up, just like raising a child 👶, takes a village. #synbio #synbiobeta #biotech #fermentation
