Are you on a hybrid team? Regardless of the model, creating community and fostering a sense of belonging are key. Recently, I had a conversation with Jonathan H. Westover, PhD, MPA, AF-CIPD, SFHEA about building community in hybrid work. Here are some top tips we discussed: - Utilize in-person days for building connections, not just attending virtual meetings. - Make sure to continue your 1:1 time with team members. - Establish meaningful points of connection virtually. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲—𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? Yesterday, I attended Tech & Taste by iconomy —one of my favorite networking series in Berlin. It’s a fantastic space for thought-provoking discussions and authentic connections. Highly recommend getting on their invite list! Last night was all about the "𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺" sparking the question above and getting me thinking: 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹. A room full of people is only a potential. What brings a space to life is meaningful conversation. True community happens when conversations inspire trust, engagement, and connection. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗢𝗧: → 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸. Real conversations go beyond surface level, creating bonds and fostering trust. → 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀. Conversations are essential in workplaces too, bridging divides and helping us connect beyond roles. → 𝗔𝗻 "𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮" 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴. Quite the opposite—authentic exchange is foundational for a motivated, aligned team. 𝗪𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 → 𝗔𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀: Engage with curiosity. Ask questions, invite others in, and give undivided attention. If there’s no community, remember your power to create one! Host gatherings around subjects and activities that inspire you. → 𝗔𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: Don’t leave community to chance. Set the stage with meaningful questions and encourage open exchange. Sometimes a little nudge is all it takes to spark real engagement. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿? We're hardwired to belong. Authentic conversations build trust, increase motivation and foster collaboration - they're the foundation of any thriving team or community. In a world of constant connectivity yet increasing isolation, we can't leave connection to chance. It's essential to proactively cultivate meaningful connections - with ourselves and with others. 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂: How important is community in your life and work, and what do you do to stay engaged? 🌟 Private Communities Beyond Social Media! 🌟 Today, where social media dominates our lives, there is a growing number of private communities springing up, to combat our dependence on social media. 💡 But why are these communities important, why do we need them? 1️⃣ Quality Over Quantity: Private communities cultivate a space for meaningful connections and interactions, fostering genuine relationships based on shared interests or goals, cutting out the noise from social media. 2️⃣ Focused Discussions: By narrowing down the scope, these communities enable members to engage in deeper, more relevant conversations, free from distractions and superficial content. 3️⃣ Enhanced Privacy and Security: With heightened control over membership and content visibility, private communities offer a safer environment for open dialogue and knowledge sharing. 4️⃣ Tailored Content and Resources: Members can access curated content, exclusive resources, and specialised expertise tailored to their interests or professional needs, enriching their learning experiences. 5️⃣ Building Trust and Collaboration: Through regular interactions and mutual support, private communities foster trust and collaboration, paving the way for meaningful partnerships and collective growth. 6️⃣ Opportunities for Networking and Growth: Whether it's seeking mentorship, career advice, or collaboration opportunities, private communities provide a better environment for expanding your network and professional horizons. Let's recognise private communities' invaluable role in making authentic connections and empowering individuals and businesses alike. 🚀 Ready to explore the possibilities beyond social media? There is a lot of debate with organisations urging more people to physically return to the office. It is a shame if reverted 100% back to pre-Covid days when we all know it is possible to still be high performing with flexible work arrangements. What are some things we could do to enable a supportive remote working environment? 1. Be flexible - manage individual scenarios. There is no one size fits all. Where possible, enable people to work in a way that suits them best while balancing their own needs and responsibilities. 2. Be present - Act mindfully to create a sense of belonging. Make sure everyone is feeling part of the team and supported to contribute and be heard. This can also enrich our relationships for the longer term too. 3. Be an anchor - Maintain routine and rituals. Where possible, try to keep your team's routines in place. Create new virtual rituals around meetings, social catch ups and team celebrations. These provide structure and boost our sense of belonging and connection. Do you have any more you could add to the list? Grit and Grace is about building a community of like minded individuals who thrive in all areas of life - career, business, health, family, personal development, finance and being a community leader. Doing more and more work with businesses who recognise that doing great work means collaboration with great people - inside and beyond their own organisation. Yet that comes with challenges and new ways of working. Five suggestions based upon the work I'm doing to help build active communities of collaborators: 1/ Audit - review what you've already got and who you already worked with. This saves time and money, and unlocks existing trusted collaborators. We are finding that most orgs don't have a handle on who is already accessible to them, what they are spending, or the ROI of collaboration. 2/ Ambition - set a few intentions for how you're using the community, so you can spot any gaps, and have ways to evaluate if what you're doing is working 3/ Tools - find a suitable talent platform which allows you to manage your community, search by skills and experience, and contract with compliance. 4/ Preboard - help your community get started faster with onboarding before a brief, so they know your culture and products. 5/ Activate - look for common ways of activating your community and codify them, to help reduce complexity and accelerate outcomes. There's more to the framework, and it's an interesting time to see the divide between organisations investing in fluid networks and those stepping away from external collaborators.
