Governments have urged action to strengthen the security and resiliency of undersea cable infrastructure, thereby protecting global communications and data from compromise. This includes incorporating cybersecurity best practices in the design of undersea cable infrastructure, reducing the risk of these services being hacked. The joint statement, endorsed by the US, UK, Canada, France, the EU and numerous other countries, warned of the national security risks posed by growing dependency on communication technologies, and in particular the undersea cables that enable the transmission of vast volumes of data. The statement highlighted the vast undersea cable infrastructure that needs protecting, necessitating a global strategy. Alongside the communication cables themselves, the strategy includes elements related to their construction, operation, surveillance, maintenance and repair, such as landing stations, software, and the terrestrial parts of the undersea cable connecting to them. #underseacable #cybersecurity #cableinfrastructure

Critical National Infrastructure organizations rely heavily on outdated legacy systems and is one of the most prized targets for cybercriminals globally. With threats coming from a nation-state level, threat actors look to undermine democracy and pursue economic gain through attacks which often threaten physical safety and even loss of life. In Kate O'Flaherty’s recent article in ITPro, our COO Stephen Kines explains that such legacy CNI systems were "Designed without security in mind, [and such] antiquated infrastructure often lacks the capability for vulnerability patches or straightforward upgrades, leaving them exposed to modern #cyberthreats", and highlighting the importance of investing in network segmentation and keeping systems offline to reduce the threat. https://lnkd.in/eihcGdpW #NATODIANA #NCSCForStartups #MadeInUK

The New Geopolitical Weapon: The Impact of Cyberattacks Against Critical Infrastructure https://lnkd.in/ee9SeMzu Electricity, transportation, water, communications – these are just some of the systems and assets that keep the world functioning. Critical infrastructure, a complex interconnected ecosystem, is what props entire countries up and is vital for the functioning of society and the economy. This is why it is under attack. Threat actors, usually nation-state backed, know this very well. By taking down the poorly protected power grid of a city or even a country, cyber attackers cannot only cause mass chaos, but any threat to the critical infrastructure sectors could have potentially debilitating national security, economic and public health or safety […]

Did you know? In our wireless world, we tend to forget that undersea cables are the backbone that connects us all. ✔ In 2022, there were 450 submarine cables extending over a network of 1.35 million kilometers encircling the Earth 33 times. ✔ 99% of communications pass through these cables. These are the hidden data highways, 1 petabyte is 1,000,000 gigabytes, that's what these highways drain per second! Submarine cables are our digital veins, essential for global connectivity and data transmission. Their strategic importance for the economy and security is undeniable, as is their vulnerability to cyberattacks or physical threats. Let us remember that protecting this infrastructure is crucial to maintaining the stability and resilience of our connected world.
