GR Corolla’s Hydrogen-Powered Journey: Achievements and Challenges at the 24-Hour Endurance Race In a remarkable display of innovation and perseverance, drivers Morizo and Masahiko Kondo brought the GR Corolla across the finish line after the grueling 24-hour endurance race. In its second year, the liquid hydrogen-powered Corolla completed 332 laps, covering nearly 1,515 kilometers. Despite encountering brake issues that prevented it from surpassing last year’s record of 358 laps (approximately 1,634 kilometers), the team celebrated significant advancements and valuable learnings. Further boost to Hydrogen combustion technology expected this weekend - if Morizo doesn't break it first...... A Toyota GR Corolla with key hydrogen updates will compete in the Super Taikyu 24h race in Japan this weekend. Piloted by a number of top-level drivers including Morizo (I guess you know who he is.....) and Jari-Mati Latvala, race car number 32 features an updated liquid hydrogen pump and a custom-shaped fuel tank. The change from a cylindrical tank to an oval tank will increase hydrogen capacity from 10kg to 15kg, thereby allowing the car to run for around 30 laps before refuelling. And the updated liquid hydrogen fuel pump is intended to last 24hours or more, rather having to be replaced every 8hours. It's a clear demonstration of the benefit of using harsh environments like 24h racing to test, develop and refine technologies that could be used in more everyday environments. As normal Morizo will be looking to break the car.... not because he wants it to fail, but because he wants to ensure the technology that enters wider use won't fail. The Alpenglow Hy4 is said to mark something of a turning point. Of course there’s the usual line about motorsport influencing road cars - ‘Alpine firmly believes in the role of motorsport as an accelerator for the development of future mobility technologies’ is the soundbite this time - but also a declaration of support for hydrogen from Renault. A joint venture with Plug called HYVIA is promising hydrogen charging stations (with liquid hydrogen being explored also), fleet financing and maintenance for a hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicle will be in place, there’s going to be a hybrid using a hydrogen range extender, and there are engines in development specifically designed to be powered by hydrogen. They will be for ‘high-powered extra-urban commercial use and specific sportier purposes.’
