Bayer | Crop Science is championing climate resilient practices across some key arenas. 🌽 Food Security: We've made significant strides in breeding advancements which have enabled us to feed a larger population while conserving arable land. With the global population on the rise, expected to reach >9 billion by 2050, it's crucial to ensure a robust food system that can provide nourishing food for all. Our downstream partnership approach aims to encourage farmers, food processors, and traders to collaborate for sustainable and resilient food systems. 🧑🌾 Smallholder Farmers: Our goal is to support 100 million smallholder farmers in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) by 2030. We're achieving this through climate-resilient seeds, comprehensive trainings, and strategic partnerships. We believe in empowering farmers with the necessary resources to adopt sustainable agricultural practices. 🌾 Transforming Cropping Systems: Rice is one of the most important staple crops in the world. Transitioning from traditional rice cultivation to direct seeded rice has resulted in up to 40% reduction in water usage and up to 45% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. Transforming the rapeseed supply chain with regenerative agriculture 🌱   Sustainability is a journey, pursued together with others. 🌍 At AAK, we are actively collaborating with our rapeseed suppliers and customers to measure and manage emissions across our supply chain. Therefore, my goal with the 2024/2025 AMB series is to trim some of the abstract away from the sustainability skeleton, and hopefully provide you with a better foundation of agricultural sustainability. "100 Million Farmers: Breakthrough Models for Financing a Sustainability Transition" by World Economic Forum addresses the need to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable food production system. This transition will be instrumental in achieving climate goals i.e. reducing greenhouse gas emissions, save biodiversity and enhance water management. Key learning from the report include: 🌱Barriers to Adoption: Farmers face significant obstacles in adopting sustainable practices, such as economic risks, high upfront costs, and uncertain returns, as well as challenges in accessing necessary resources and overcoming social resistance. 🌱Innovative Financing Needed: To overcome these barriers, the report recommends the development of flexible financing models, including favorable lending terms, insurance options, and upfront payments or guarantees to reduce financial risks for farmers during the transition. 🌱Monetization of Ecosystem Services: The report highlights the critical need to fully monetize the environmental benefits of regenerative agriculture—such as carbon sequestration and improved water quality—to generate the necessary capital to support farmers. 🌱Collaborative Efforts Required: A coordinated approach involving multiple stakeholders, including financial institutions, governments, and the private sector, is essential for pooling resources, sharing risks, and scaling up successful initiatives to support farmers effectively. 🌱Examples and Roadmap: The report provides practical examples of existing programs and outlines a roadmap for scaling these models. 2023 has been another meaningful stepping stone on Corteva Agriscience's ongoing sustainability journey. Our recently launched 2023 Sustainability Report provides an aerial view of the extent of the progress we have made over the past year towards our four core sustainability pillars. The results are great, reflecting the commitment of our global 23,000-strong team, who embed our values into their actions and decisions every day. Sustainability is our primary consideration, and through our collective efforts, as #OneCorteva, we have made considerable progress. Today, I want to highlight some of our core achievements for 2023: ❇️ Achieved our goal of 100% of newly-developed Corteva solutions in our pipeline, meeting our sustainability criteria. ❇️ Supported 1.7M hectares with biodiversity and outcomes aligned to regenerative agriculture since 2021. ❇️ Surpassed $2 billion in spending with diverse suppliers and small businesses. ❇️ Attained 25 percent of net crop protection revenue from new, sustainably-advantaged products. ❇️ Realized a 21 percent Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity reduction I am proud of the work we are doing across sustainable innovation, biodiversity, climate and inclusion, diversity and equity. Collectively, these pillars help ensure food security, climate resilience, and an energy transition while driving greater value for farmers.
