How do we - as citizens, organisations and governments - regain control of our data and our digital lives? On June 6, I'll be speaking in Amsterdam at a conference by PublicSpaces and Waag Futurelab, to share what we have been doing with Indian human rights defenders and diaspora to reclaim an internet that respects human rights and human life. If you're there, come and say hi! 🖐🏽 https://lnkd.in/ecfTtbDn

Freiheit, Gleichheit, Solidarność. Polish Viewpoints in Berlin. EXHIBITION Exhibition opening: 31.5.2024 | 18.00 Location: BERLIN GLOBAL exhibition, Humboldt Forum Schlossplatz, 10178 Berlin Poles have lived in Berlin for centuries and shaped the cultural, social, political and economic life of the city. The Polish border is less than 100 kilometres away. And yet, the city’s close ties with its neighbouring country sometimes only become visible at a second glance. The Open Space “Liberty, Equality, Solidarność” in the BERLIN GLOBAL exhibition looks at Berlin as a site of Polish struggles for freedom and against discrimination, as well as a place of dialogue and solidarity. The multi-layered installation by Ewa Maria Slaska, Anna Krenz and Jemek Jemowit introduces visitors to seven sites in Berlin where Polish people have fought for freedom, equality and solidarity. Spread throughout the city, they include the Olympic Stadium, the Warschauer Brücke, Moabit Prison and Volkspark Friedrichshain. The Open Space also shares Polish perspectives on everyday life in Berlin, moving between a sense of belonging and experiences of discrimination. It explores the traces of historical power relations and the ways they affect coexistence. The Open Space invites visitors to share their different points of view and engage in dialogue, even when the topics are difficult. In doing so, the Open Space itself becomes a further place of Polish-Berlin solidarity. More: https://lnkd.in/dfFyTn83

ARTISTS AND THE POLITICAL AGORA SOTA Foyer at the Beursschouwburg Thursday 30/05 | 18h - 20h, August Ortsstraat 20/28, 1000 Brussel Ahead of the elections, the battle for identity and the discussions about social and societal values are burning brightly. All political parties – from the far left to the far right – identify art and culture as a powerful tool to shape identity, to create social cohesion, to be innovative with the creation of new values or – on the contrary – repair conservative ones. This results in wild speculations on what art and culture is or should be, what it should interfere with or even take responsibility for. Where do we as artists find ourselves in this battle field? How do we raise our voices on the one hand and protect the vulnerable space we work in on the other? Can the existing institutional order, politics and policymaking still be a partner in this? Or is the self-organized space the only answer? What role do subsidized cultural organizations and institutions play in this? With the help from some of the almanac’s wisdom, we’ll look for answers to our questions. Everybody welcome!

Wednesday 21 Feb 2024 19:00 - 21:00 @ Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten - Schip Sarphatistraat 470, 1018 GW Amsterdam Free entrance, RSVP here : https://lnkd.in/emcKPxXp Donations welcome * 🇵🇸 (Unseen) War and Conflict is a two-day forum and film programme that focuses on the city of Amsterdam and aims to show the complexities of how conflict and war are experienced. We will share, listen and discuss different ways of oppression that have been normalised and even institutionalised in society, giving light to the -most of the times unseen- inner struggles of how communities and individuals have been dealing with political and social crises in their daily lives. This two-day programme started as an initiative of some of the artists participating in the Refresh Amsterdam #2: War and Conflict exhibition together with some Rijksakademie resident artists and team, as a response to the institutional invisibilisation of the many ongoing human crises still occurring outside the centres of (mediatic) power. Questions on the position of art-thinking and making as activism in front of socio-ecological crisis, the agency of images and imagination as critical stance of mediatic manipulation, as well as how war and conflict are continuously embodied and experienced in the temporal and spatial distance of the territory in conflict, will be addressed. This event is part of the public programme of Refresh Amsterdam #2: War and Conflict. This edition of Refresh Amsterdam addresses the impact of international war and conflict on the contemporary city, particularly its inhabitants and social structures. Amsterdam has long viewed itself as a city of freedom and a place of refuge. But what does war do to a city and our social intercourse? Why do certain wars and conflict situations generate more solidarity than others? *Door donations and drink/food sales during the programme will be destined to cover emergency medical care to pregnant women, the sick and seriously injured in Gaza, through Doctors without Borders. https://lnkd.in/eEGbnBCb

Hello Future! ✨ We are overwhelmed and thankful for the amazing news we received last week from Culturele Zaken Gemeente Utrecht and Fonds Podiumkunsten. Thanks for the trust. Thanks for the courage to support our un-disciplinary work. Both funds decided to support us in the next 4 years making it possible to realise many new projects. Together with our partners and collaborators we are looking forward to what lies ahead. This is a big and exciting step for the studio! Four tears 💧 At the same time, we are shocked by the news. More than 50 colleagues, artists and organisation whose work we respect and admire, will not receive funding from 2025. The field of arts and culture is a sensitive biotope in which the elements are related and depended on each other. Chopping some of the most impressive trees might give space ad light for the younger ones to grow; yet, it will affect the entire ecosystem and challenge the existence of its networks. Imagining a future in such precarious and unstable environment is everything but inspiring. And we know how it feels and what it’s like to get positive advice but not the money to realise the works. Been there, done that… So where do we go from here? How can we reimagine the systems of cultural funding? How to perform solidarity in theatres? How to put the money where the mouth is? We invite you to express your support via 👉 https://lnkd.in/erHwVygh #LAATHETDOEKNIETVALLEN Nederlandse Associatie voor Podiumkunsten (NAPK)

Het Parool in print from 29.02 - Interview with Andrea Voets conducted by Gina Miroula According to Voets, the radio show FOR REAL is about human dignity. The problem of women not being heard is only part of that, she says. If you are not heard, the consequences are threefold: relational (it is difficult to build meaningful relationships if others are not really interested in who you are and what you think), identity-related (you start doubting your own abilities and possibilities, and even your own desires) and existential (life is short and everyone has only one life, the frustration of disabled careers, the lack of support, opportunities, and possibilities take years off ones` life). In FOR REAL this is illustrated by an anecdote from a woman about how her own mother sacrificed her artistic talent for the sake of her family. Voets emphasises the painful and frightening aspect of the loss of opportunities for women. The passage is supported by countless other experiences that show how careers are damaged. Writer Gaea Schoeters calls this professional humiliation, a term that helps Voets identify and understand the phenomenon. Although she is not very optimistic about the future and the unequal opportunities for many, Voets works very hard, usually sixty hours a week. "In Greek, they say: if my grandmother had balls, she would have been my grandfather. The big 'if-thinking' leads nowhere. I'm a woman, but I don't care. It shouldn't matter "I want to do my very best work in this life and not be limited because I happened to be born a woman." 📅 - Tour dates: ◾ Amsterdam | 1 (sold out) & 2 March (16:00 and 20:00) - De Balie, Amsterdam ◾ Den Haag | 8 March (17:30 and 20:15) - Het Nationale Theater ◾ Mechelen (BE) | 5 May - Lunalia Festival ◾ Rotterdam | 17 & 18 May - O. festival at the Debatpodium Arminius Article Link: https://lnkd.in/eHY_R5X4

https://lnkd.in/etWHqVDK This year, NGCI attends re:publica 24 festival in Berlin! As a platform for new perspectives and points of view, the festival facilitates a colourful and diverse dialogue that puts responsibility before profits and focuses on the potential for human development, with everyone in society committed to or standing up for the common good. As a digitally diverse society, we are threatened by complex issues and worsening crises that require multidimensional solutions. To meet future challenges, we will need a society that promotes solidarity, public advocacy, and civic engagement rather than one geared toward growth and success. Re: publica takes on these challenges with great curiosity and playful joy, leaving space for positive developments and innovation. So whether we are optimistic or worried, the question is clear: WHO CARES? #rp24

Today's funding application outcome letters that the Swedish Arts Council sent out to a broad selection of the Swedish culture sector are dire. Some major players and organisations are left without funding from the Arts Council until further notice. While the outcome was not entirely unexpected, the potential ripple effect of these funding decisions is likely to be substantial, potentially leaving a deep and lasting imprint on our industry. 211 organisations and creators applied for 50 million, a testament to the need in our sector. However, only 4 million Swedish Crows were awarded, highlighting the stark reality of our industry's situation. To be clear, only 9% of the funding was approved. If you translate this into the number of work opportunities and cultural offerings nationwide that are in danger, then the real damage is becoming apparent. You get what you vote for. #sweden #politics #culture #kulturrådet #kulturbudget #kultur
