This article, by the eminent scholar Dirk Schulze-Makuch, sadly smacks of the diffidence that has historically directed human thinking about Others for thousands of years and poorly counsels thinking (including game-theoretical thinking) about first contact today. It is flawed, illogical, hegemonic — and if followed in its traditional path, will result in our falling into the Hobbesian trap and in catastrophe for humanity. Diffident thinking is a basal response — so implicit that it biases our thinking in ways we find difficult to recognise. The way forwards is to consciously seek to identify this implicit short-cut thinking, identify occasions where its is present, and effort should be spent on developing more robust axiomatic decision matrices to better guide first contact, as I have mentioned in my recent publication here: https://lnkd.in/gkZxuJf2

But how can even the most altruistic guardian hope to understand and fairly represent the complex web of interrelationships and co-dependencies on which all life depends?
