"Pause is Power" is one of the most impactful campaign messages coming from the 2024 Paris Olympics thus far. Many of us know Simone Biles as a powerhouse in the world of gymnastics, an American icon. However, during the 2020 Olympics, she faced an extreme mental block, forcing her to withdraw from the competition. The pressure from the media and the immense expectations she had built for herself culminated in a boiling point, where her athletic performance suffered. Arguably, she changed the narrative of how the public views extraordinary athletes, revealing their vulnerability and showing that, at the end of the day, they are as human as anyone else and sometimes need a break. It is inevitable that athletes can face a plateau, where the pressure to become better, faster, and stronger can cause harmful mental side effects that often go unspoken. Personally, coming from competitive swimming most of my life, we always said it was 80% mental and 20% physical. Therefore, I understand that an athlete's mental health is imperative to their performance and safety. Seeing Simone's comeback from 2020 to 2024 has been incredibly inspiring. Her story has sparked worldwide conversations about improving support for athletes' mental health. When looking into the marketing trends for the 2024 Paris Olympics, I am thrilled to see campaigns and advertisements like her partnership with Powerade, which open conversations about mental health and advocate for the ability to take breaks. The emotional resonance of the campaign video has been a huge success point for the collaboration, deeply impacting and connecting with viewers. The lesson I hope many people take away from this is that in many aspects of life, taking a break is necessary for the longevity of success; a moment to step back, refocus, and recharge can do more good than one can imagine. 🎥 When instincts go rogue: the wildest pickleball match you’ll ever see. We’ve all had those moments—a bad call, a frustrating rally, and suddenly... BOOM! But hopefully not kicking-someone-in-the-head. 💡 Sound extreme? There’s a little bit of all of us in this. Our primal instincts can drive us—but how do we keep them in check? Dr. Steve Peters calls this the battle between the Chimp mind and the Human mind. Dr. Jonathan Haidt frames it as the Elephant and the Rider. Daniel Kahneman? It’s Thinking Fast and Slow. Neuroscience? Amygdala vs. Prefrontal Cortex. Physicians? The Sympathetic Nervous System and the PNS. Sig Freud? Unconcious and Consious Dr Ceri Evans? Red Head and Blue Head Whatever you call it, the balance between impulse and control shapes everything—from our sportsmanship to our relationships. A little heat can fuel passion, but too much? Well... let’s just say it’s a kick in the face. 🤔 So, what about you? What tools do you have to tame your inner Chimp or Elephant—or at least keep your cool long enough to avoid making a viral video like this? Comment below and let’s learn from each other. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gMpiVvK8

There's a peculiar form of psychological torture that takes place in endurance sports, where victory and defeat can exist simultaneously, like Schrödinger's race result. Triathletes call it 'chasing carrots,' but it's really about the remarkable way humans can triumph and despair in the exact same moment. "Sometimes, taking a pause is the most powerful thing you can do." It's stories like these that make me excited for my career in the Marketing space. On a zoom meeting the other day, we discussed the impacts of marketing campaigns and the effects of marketing to the new Generation of Gen Z. I was introduced to this wonderful ad where Biles highlights her partnership with Powerade before Paris 2024. We realized, Simone Biles' Powerade ad isn't just about her journey—it's a powerful example of how storytelling in sports is evolving to embrace emotion and authenticity. Here's why it's so exciting for the future of sports narratives: 1️⃣ Emotional Resonance: Biles' ad doesn't shy away from the highs and lows of her journey. It taps into real emotions that every athlete can relate to, making it a compelling and relatable story. 2️⃣ Authenticity Over Glamour: In a world of polished narratives, this ad stands out for its authenticity. It's not about flashy effects or exaggerated achievements; it's about the raw, unfiltered reality of what it means to be a dedicated athlete who encounters many obstacles along their career. 3️⃣Empowerment Through Representation: Seeing Biles and other athletes in action isn't just inspiring—it's empowering. It sends a powerful message that anyone, regardless of background or challenges faced, can strive for greatness and make their mark in the sports world. 4️⃣Engagement and Connection: This ad doesn't just tell a story; it invites viewers to engage and connect on a deeper level. It sparks conversations, encourages sharing of personal experiences, and fosters a sense of camaraderie among athletes and sports fans. Simone Biles' Powerade ad is a glimpse into the future of sports storytelling—one that values authenticity, diversity, and emotional resonance. It sets the stage for more meaningful narratives that inspire, empower, and unite athletes worldwide. #PauseIsPower #Authenticity #Storytelling #paris2024 #OLY #Powerade

When it comes to med ball throws, intent is king 👑 To get the most out of them, we need athletes to be trying to move the ball as fast as they possibly can. I find that simple external cues work best, to drive intent, eg knock the wall down. #strengthandconditioning #strengthandconditioningcoach

There's a reason so many professional athletes across all sports practice regular visualization. The exercise will not only make you more confident and calmer under pressure, but it can even improve physical performance by increasing reaction times and refining in-game movements.
