As we get to the other end of a week in which infrastructure robustness and resilience were put to a true test in the UAE and beyond, a good time to share a recently published article by Fast Company "Air taxis get closer to takeoff in Dubai. But are we ready?", in which I contribute my thoughts along with those of Skyports Infrastructure CEO Duncan Walker on the topic. Definitely not for every trip type, nor to resolve all accessibility and equity challenges, but surely an additional mode that, with the right planning and implementation, will help create an alternative option towards a better integrated and more efficient mobility landscape for people, goods and services - that is ready for planned events, but most importantly for unplanned operating conditions, when it is needed the most. #UrbanAirMobility #UAM #SmartMobility #Resilience #InnovativeMobility #FlyingTaxis Strategy& Middle East Fast Company Middle East
Electric flying taxis between Dubai and Abu Dhabi could make journeys between the two cities as short as just 30 minutes, which currently take more than two hours during peak traffic hours. Developers Archer and Falcon Aviation say the first step in the plan could come as early as 2025. “With overly strained road networks and ever-growing congestion, and amid a constant search for new efficient mobility modes, flying taxis offer an alternative. Concrete deployment plans are already underway in Dubai, en route to larger-scale adoption in the region,” says Gustave Cordahi, Principal, Strategy& Middle East, part of the PwC Network. “Any journeys of 20 kilometers to 150 kilometers will be well suited for air taxi operations.” “During peak times, it can take up to two hours to travel from Dubai to neighboring Sharjah by car, for example, so we anticipate a strong appetite from commuters for a faster, more efficient alternative that is also environmentally friendly,” says Skyports Infrastructure CEO Duncan Walker.

Sometimes I wonder, has progress stalled? 🛑 You know, technology didn't always mean the latest software. Technology used to refer to everything that made people and industries and economies function better. Everything from planes, to bridges, to spaceships is, in fact, technology. 🛸 And yet, we've seen incredible progress in only ONE field of technology- processing power. But what about cars? Airplanes? Boats? Buildings? Roads? Bridges? Medicine? Agriculture? Only marginally better than they were 30 years ago. In the '60s, people used to imagine that we'd have flying cars by the year 2000. Instead, we got the iPod (to quote Peter Thiel). But that may soon change. Dubai 🇦🇪, for example, is poised to become the first city in the world to launch flying taxis! Check out our newest article below for more details. ⬇️ And so much more can happen, so fast, and in so many other places. It just takes human ingenuity 🧠. #flyingtaxi #VTOL #tech #innovation #dubai

Dubai is expanding into air mobility by introducing air taxis as these modern transport systems will substantially reduce travel time The Dubai-based private aviation operator Air Chateau has ordered 10 electric flying cars from European mobility solution provider Crisalion Mobility to operate as air taxi services in the UAE in 2030. It is a European company’s first commercial partnership in the Middle East. Crisalion’s Integrity air taxi, which is currently under development, can accommodate up to five passengers and a pilot and caters to urban and intercity passenger and cargo transport needs. It has a speed of 180 kilometres per hour and a range of 130km based on the current battery technology. The UAE and Saudi Arabia are aggressively expanding into air mobility by introducing air taxis as these new modern transport systems will substantially reduce travel time. Currently, Joby and Archer Aviation are in the process of launching their flying cars along with their UAE partners next year. After Dubai, Mohamed said they would look at parts of the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Europe for expansion. The UAE firm’s order of 10 Integrityair taxis or eVTOLs at Farnborough International Airshow 2024 in the UK expands Crisalion’s conditional pre-order book to 125 aircraft in less than a year. The two companies will jointly work to launch air taxis across major cities in the region including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The companies said that the agreement could also expand to joint projects in Europe. Samir Mohamed, chairman of Air Chateau, said the launch of air taxis will alleviate the burden on legacy ground infrastructure, complement existing transportation networks, reduce congestion and build a sustainable future.

Joby Aviation partners with Abu Dhabi to establish electric air taxi ecosystem Multilateral agreement signed with three Abu Dhabi government departments Joby Aviation’s eVTOL aircraft displayed at the World Governments Summit in Dubai on February 12, 2024. Joby and Dubai’s RTA signed a deal that allows the US company to operate air taxi services in the emirate for six years from 2026. Joby Aviation, a company developing all-electric aircraft for commercial passenger service, signed a multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with three Abu Dhabi government departments to lay the groundwork for Joby to establish and scale air taxi services in Abu Dhabi, and beyond. The deal, signed at the DRIFTx international thought-leadership and exhibition platform in Abu Dhabi, was inked with the Department of Municipalities and Transport - Abu Dhabi (DMT), the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (DED), and the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi. "The MoU demonstrates the breadth of support available to Joby as part of their participation in the Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) cluster and builds on Joby’s existing commitments to the UAE, which include the exclusive right to operate air taxi services in Dubai, which the company expects to start as early as next year. The agreement also unlocks the potential for inter-emirate air taxi services, for example between Abu Dhabi and Dubai," the company said in a statement. Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of DMT, commented on the agreement, saying: "Through the Emirate’s SAVI cluster and this partnership with Joby, we are not only laying the foundation for cutting-edge air taxi services but also shaping the future of transportation.. We look forward to seeing their innovative aircraft take off from the UAE capital, offering the world a glimpse, through Abu Dhabi, of what the future of mobility looks like.” Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of ADDED, said: “Smart and autonomous vehicles in particular are experiencing rapid growth, buoyed by the launch of the SAVI cluster, which leverages Abu Dhabi’s world-class infrastructure to scale the operations of global companies. Joby’s expansion into Abu Dhabi is a testament to the success of this strategy.” Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “The introduction of scale air taxi services marks a significant addition, enhancing accessibility to natural attractions, tourist hotspots, and architectural landmarks, thereby elevating overall visitor experiences.” JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO, Joby Aviation, said: “We’re looking forward to delivering a fantastic experience for our future customers in Abu Dhabi and we’re excited to be unlocking the potential for zero-emissions flight between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Revolutionising urban mobility - with emission-free and safe air taxis. That is the vision of the German company Volocopter. And they are already getting a little closer to achieving their goal this year, as the first commercial routes will be flown in Paris! Rome, Osaka and Saudi Arabia are set to follow "In large and smaller cities alike, our transport systems are reaching the limits of their capacity," says CEO Dirk Hoke. Traffic jams, congested roads and exhaust fumes - this is the reality in cities all over the world. "Our vision is to offer people an additional mobility option - without traffic jams and without emissions," Hoke explains. There is great interest in the electric aircraft - over 40 partner cities are working with Volocopter. This is also due to the strong brand "Made in Germany". "Germany has an excellent reputation, especially in the field of engineering. That is also one of the reasons why we were able to set up a company that now employs around 600 people," explains Hoke. 👏 Even if air taxis may not be the most suitable option for everybody, Volocopter is paving the way for emission-free aviation in the future. ❓ Would you use an air taxi? #MadeInGermany
