In this paper Dr Abdur Rehman Cheema and colleagues have assessed the local government systems in Pakistan(2013-2020) and highlights key barriers to aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It reveals bureaucratic dominance, fiscal limitations, and inconsistent political support across provinces. Recommendations include granting local bodies more autonomy, securing constitutional protection for local governance, and embracing an Integrated Area Development approach. These steps are essential for improved service delivery and sustainable development. Echoing with the recommendation of giving "Constitutional Protection" to the local governments, I believe that an effective, empowered and consistent local government system with constitutional backing is now inevitable to achieve the major targets in SDGs. This week was the week of the 12th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition, from 11th to 13th. This years theme was "Closing the Gap: Working towards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) targets." Of particular interest to me was the session on the Blue Economy Strategy. It was good to meet Mr. George MBA Asseko, Head of Blue Economy at the African Union Commission again. In his presentation he echoed: ▪︎The importance of paying more attention to water as a resource, because as cliché as it sounds, water is life. ▪︎Now that we have the strategy in place, the importance putting in place legal & institutional frameworks for it's implementation. The last point is something that is so important. I have keenly observed in the last few years how we have alot of good policies in the food security related spaces, that have not been implemented. Thankfully events like these foster an environment to think together and find solutions to move forward. Let's encourage #development while protecting our #environment for intra and intergenerational equity. We also need proper economic valuation of our natural resources which boosts our ratings and should be considered a strength! not to forget our cheap and readily available labor market from our youths and the young people. Our rich ecosystems sink alot of carbon emissions to counter #climatechange effects. According to Article 9A - Every person shall be entitled to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. Now it's the responsibility of the government to provide a clean and healthy environment and to take steps in this regard. Now Peace & Justice Network (پیس اینڈ جسٹس نیٹ ورک پاکستان) - PJN network members can effectively do policy advocacy and the strategic litigations to make the government accountable for their steps as part of PJN's #ClimateJustice action. This article can be linked with any road project, any industrial project, anything that impacts the environment or creates pollution.
