Sustainably: Achievable or Just Another Cliché? Is "sustainability" just a buzzword, or can we truly integrate it into our daily lives and businesses? Is it just another cliché that has become widely used in recent times or is it achievable even on the smallest of scales? According to the Brundtland Commission, Sustainability is “Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” This holistic definition emphasizes on the need for the continued availability of resources for future generations. Let's break down the barriers and explore actionable steps towards a more sustainable future. 1. Small Steps, Big Impact: Simple changes like reducing waste, conserving energy, and choosing eco-friendly products can make a significant difference. 2. Forget about 𝘚𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦. It’s time to 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞. Too many sustainability professionals are obsessed with reporting and disclosure, treating them as the goal rather than the 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 they are. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 is not the report itself—it's aligning with the EU Green Deal and achieving its ambitious targets. The EU Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) weren’t developed in a vacuum. They’re not about collecting data for data’s sake. They’re designed to 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐡 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐚 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥 – achieving the EU Green Deal. This should be your guidebook. This is what every sustainability professional needs to understand: ESRS is not the end goal; it’s the means to achieving it. Here’s what the ESRS is truly driving us towards: 🔹 𝐄𝐒𝐑𝐒 𝟏- Climate Neutral by 2050 Set ambitious goals, like achieving at least a 55% net reduction in emissions by 2030 and being climate-neutral by 2050 with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. 🔹𝐄𝐒𝐑𝐒 𝟐 - Zero Pollution Action Plan Aim for a toxic-free environment by 2050. This includes a 55% reduction in air pollution by 2030 and significant cuts in plastic litter, microplastics, and pesticide use. 🔹 𝐄𝐒𝐑𝐒 𝟑 - Water & Marine Resources / Sustainable Blue Economy Focus on sustainable fishing, ship recycling, marine biodiversity protection, and reducing emissions through offshore renewable energy and decarbonizing maritime activities. 🔹 𝐄𝐒𝐑𝐒 𝟒 - Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 Protect 30% of land and sea. Restore ecosystems through a nature restoration plan and integrate biodiversity into decision-making. 🔹 𝐄𝐒𝐑𝐒 𝟓 - Circular Economy Action Plan Make sustainable product design the norm, cut waste by 50% by 2030, and decouple growth from resource use, all while targeting climate neutrality. Stop waiting for top management to drive this change. The message is clear: sustainability reporting is a means to 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 and course-correct toward achieving the EU Green Deal. Understand the ESRS. Align with the Green Deal. What’s the real story behind sustainability reports? Are they just another burden, or the most powerful tool for differentiation in a market where everyone seems to offer the same thing? 🌍 Carbon emissions: Which scopes do we report? Scope 1 only, or also Scopes 2 and 3? (Aligned with GHG Protocol and CSRD) 💧 Water on the agenda: Sustainable water use and extraction (Linked to ESRS E3). ♻️ Circular economy: How do we measure waste generation and circularity? (Aligned with ESRS E5). 🤝 Human rights and working conditions: Advancing comprehensive policies (#CSRD and #CSDDD). 🔍 Supply chain and biodiversity: Transparency and mitigating impacts (CSDDD). The biggest challenge with these reports lies in the lack of prepared teams and effective #governance. Which company has a #sustainability team as strong as its finance team? If both reports are supposed to hold equal strategic importance, why does this burden still fall on just a handful of individuals within organizations? And what about water? Since the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) in 2015, we’ve come to understand that water is a cross-cutting issue, essential to achieving all goals for a positive future. However, during the UN meeting in New York in 2023—almost halfway to the SDG deadline—it became clear that water still doesn’t hold the central place it deserves in global agendas. The good news, it's not a technical problem! A silent yet powerful market—the water purification industry—has been working for over 70 years to ensure that water is not a problem. Becoming #WaterPositive and generating fresh water sustainably is not only possible but also competitive. Technologies leveraging seawater and wastewater reuse are demonstrating that innovation can pave the way toward a sustainable and regenerative future. Technologies like seawater #desalination and #wastewater reuse are demonstrating they can pave the way toward a sustainable and regenerative future. 💧 The best time to be Water Positive was 20 years ago. The second-best opportunity is now.
