ORGANISATIONAL RED FLAGS 🚩 Many people who have experienced burnout have found that understanding the external factors contributing to burnout can be incredibly helpful in regaining their energy. Realising that burnout isn't solely due to personal factors but also influenced by external conditions can relieve the burden of self-blame, reducing stress, frustration, and anger. An essential aspect of managing your energy is being aware of how your work environment might be negatively impacting you. While this is not an exhaustive list, here are a few well-researched organisational factors that contribute to burnout: Work Type: Intensive professions, especially those involving critical care and caregiving, are particularly vulnerable to burnout. Additionally, work that is unpredictable, meaningless, or conflicts with one’s values or morals increases the risk. Workload: Work that requires sustained effort and has significant physiological and psychological costs can lead to burnout. Emotional Labour: Jobs that require ongoing emotional suppression or expression, especially when it doesn't align with one's true feelings. Lack of Autonomy and Influence: Being micro-managed or having little control over how you do your work. Role Ambiguity and Conflict: Unclear job roles and incompatible demands are major risk factors for burnout. Inadequate Supervision: Poor supervision—whether overly directive, negatively focused, dismissive of achievements, or entirely absent—can heighten burnout risk. Perceived Injustices, Violence, and Bullying: Discrimination or favouritism at work can contribute to burnout. Perceived Lack of Social Support: Having supportive leaders and coworkers can help prevent burnout. Work Hours: Imbalanced work conditions, such as shift work, high rotations, night work, long hours, or excessive overtime, disrupt life balance. Behavioural Patterns to Prevent Burnout In Nick Petrie and his team’s research, they identified eight key behavioural patterns among workers at lower risk of burnout: 1. Work with focus and dedication: they care deeply about their work and are driven. 2. Engage in reflective practice of the best and worst ways to work and live: Many had experienced burnout before. They learned from it and made the necessary changes to work more sustainably. 🔄 3. Accept that not everything will get done—and that’s okay: They focus on what’s achievable each day, prioritising wisely. ✔️ 4. Establish a transition ritual: Create a routine that helps you shift from work mode to personal time. 🌅 5. Set and maintain firm boundaries: Clearly separate your work and personal life. 6. Embrace a multifaceted identity: Cultivate interests outside of work that recharge you, breaking away from a one-dimensional career focus. 7. Implement a phone strategy: Use your phone intentionally to maintain a clear separation between work and personal time. 8. Keep work in perspective: Understand that work is just one part of your life. These individuals recognise that their worth is not tied to their job.
