Her life journey, from living in a low-income San Diego neighborhood to receiving a scholarship to study at a prestigious school, deeply influenced her educational philosophy. It highlighted the power of education to change lives, driving her to focus on special education and climate change education. She aims to empower children in their life journeys so they can create a better world for themselves and for those who will follow. 💬 Angelique’s advice on how to bring more climate change education into classrooms: “Make it fun! Make it simple! You can always work in ways that allow students to appreciate the beauty of our world while teaching the Common Core curriculum. Try running a lesson outside. If that's not possible, hop on to YouTube for a nature-related brain-break. Young students also love exploring with hands-on activities. Try repurposing used paper towel rolls, plastic bottles, milk containers, socks, etc., and use them for a class project. Collect unused items to utilize as math manipulatives. Yet, as America once led the world in learning, we've now fallen behind, stifled by a one-size-fits-all approach that leaves students unable to master even cursive writing. Our focus has shifted to crafting skilled test-takers rather than fostering true understanding, limiting our children's potential. "Challenging the White Savior Complex" The White Savior Complex, where white individuals see themselves as rescuing or enlightening people of color, can be deeply patronizing and counterproductive. A curriculum that prioritizes indigenous literature and perspectives helps dismantle this complex by showing that indigenous peoples have their own rich histories, knowledge systems, and solutions. It fosters an environment of mutual respect and learning, rather than one of condescension and imposed superiority.
