Why the secondary side of a current transformer should not be left open-circuited? The primary function of a CT is to scale down high current values to lower levels utilisable by metering and instrumentation and invariably functions as a step up transformer with reference to voltage. The Ammeter resistanc of a CT is very low, making it to work normally as a short-circuited instrument. If for any reason the ammeter is taken out of the secondary winding, then same must be short-circuited with the help of a short-circuit switch or any other shorting aid. If this is not done, then a high Magnetic force will set up a high Magnetic flux in the core, producing excessive core loss which will produce heat and essentially high voltage build-up across the secondary terminals. The high voltage can damage personnel and any electronic components leading to a flash over or an explosion of the CT. Hence, the secondary side of a CT should never be left open-circuited
