Happy Spring! As we enter the first few weeks of spring, it’s important to remember that bears are also beginning to emerge from their dens. When enjoying the outdoors, it’s crucial to remain alert in areas with a known bear presence. Always carry bear spray, and make noise appropriately, to avoid startling wildlife.

Two key concepts for coexistence with wolves (or bears or lynx) to be possible: diversity of wild prey and shepherd dogs. It is that simple and it is that achievable. Don’t let misinformation and ill intended people tell you otherwise. Even if they are the President of the EU Commission.

The Five Tools of Wildlife Management are simple yet effective! Always establish your goals, take inventory of your resources, establish management techniques, execute, and monitor.
Which tools do you use?

This #WildlifeWednesday we are featuring the Common Snapping Turtle. We received a call for a snapping turtle that was hit by a car at the Bellwood Conservation Area. The conservation officers on site were able to keep the turtle safe in their truck before Animal Services Officers Brooke and Shannon arrived from the Guelph Humane Society. The turtle had minor scrapes and cracks on the top of the shell and fortunately was not seriously injured. The turtle made a great patient when back at the humane society. We provided pain medication and fluids and then left the turtle alone for the night. In the morning the snapping turtle was transported to Hobbitstee Wildlife Refugee for on-going care.
**In this video you might notice we use a plunger over the turtles head when giving fluids, do not worry! This is a safe practice we use to make sure we don’t loose any fingers and to provide less stress to the turtle.
Fun facts:
🐢Turtles are at high risk this time of year when they are trying to cross roads for mates, nesting and food. Please keep an eye out for these little ones. If you ever see a turtle crossing the road and you would like to assist, it is crucial to move the turtle in the direction it was already going. If you are uncomfortable moving them but spot a turtle in a potentially dangerous situation, please call the Guelph Humane Society for assistance (if you are within our jurisdiction.)
🐢Snapping turtles are quite docile underwater and prefer to avoid confrontation rather than provoke. However when on land, they are vulnerable and will snap when threatened.
🐢It takes a snapping turtle 15-20 years to reach maturity and the hatchlings are independent right from birth!

Crunch time will come when the herd grows beyond the ability of the available land to support it. Then the choice will be to introduce predators and educate the public on what "nature red in tooth and claw" really means or to start to cull.
Both mean that AR policies will have to admit to their failings.
"They are Wild. They belong in the Wid." means painful and nasty deaths by being torn apart. How can ARs who opposed hunting as cruel support this option?
A cull means people killing animals. Probably by shooting. Again, how can ARs support shooting when they have campaigned vociferously to end it and against trophy hunting which supports African wildlife?

Honesty is important.
I am not at all naive to the fact that my industry has a history of using scare tactics and misinformation to get a sale.
How many people with a fear of snakes are going under their home in the crawlspace to verify there are actually snake issues under the home?
How many retirees are getting up on the 8/12 pitch of the roof of their 2 story home to confirm bats are entering through their ridge vent?
How many people are navigating up a ladddr, thorough a tiny port hole, and through 16 inches of blow in insulation in their attic to confirm the mouse issue is real?
Huntsman Wildlife was birthed from the morals of treating our clients right and not selling them a service or program they do not actually need. We wanted our community to have a trustworthy and experienced option to call when wildlife conflicts happen in their home or business.
We are not the cheapest wildlife provider in the area. We may need a day or two to get out to you. But I assure you, NO ONE attached to our organization will be dishonest, unfair, or unprofessional to you, your family, your tenants, or your team.
Thank you Michael for proving we are not saying one thing and doing another.
