I'm spending my evening listening to a super-inspiring webinar and a talk with Heydon Pickering. The hands-on experience comes into play here. Here are my three favorite thoughts: "Nothing is accessible to everyone. So stop adding things to your interface. Start limiting them." "Everyone is different. Not only different from those without disabilities but different from other people with disabilities and even different from other people with the same disabilities. So why do we design for 'screen reader users' or 'keyboard users', for example, like they're all the same person?" "Company says: We never have disabled users. Heydon says: well, with that attitude you'll never have." <BANG!> There was much much more and I recommend you to check it (link below). #DigitalAccessibility #InclusiveDesign24

This very thoughtful and well written article touches on why user research must include users with disabilities. Generative and evaluative research miss valuable information from as much as 25% of the user base when we don't make an explicit and concerted effort to include users with disabilities in our studies. "When messaging about incidents and events gets posted online using inaccessible formats, people who are blind can't access them using screen readers." The penalties in place TODAY in Colorado for state agencies that do not provide accessible digital content seem very small when you think about it from the perspective of emergency management. https://lnkd.in/ezvA-p2G

👋 I want your feedback on how to best explain why we do what we do in the accessibility & disabled communities. I'll gather & use it for my upcoming #FloridaDrupalCamp talk "Understanding 'The Why' with Accessibility". I'd love to hear from those who are #disabled & other #a11y advocates on any antidotes, experiences (good & bad), advice, stories on AT devices & adaptive strategies (good & bad), tips for areas to focus on, & anything else you think would help me to explain "the why" in digital accessibility. If that's you, please comment here. If you know someone who is, please share my post with them or repost it if you can. Thanks for your help. https://lnkd.in/gsyiGYrQ #WCAG #Section508 #ADA #ARIA #POUR #accessibility

Did you know that by pushing the ‘Tab’ key, you can jump to the next interactive element on a page like links, the play button for a video, hashtags, and buttons? Or that holding down 'shift' + 'Tab' lets you move backwards? Did you know... our websites are accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities? Imagine trying to use a website but not being able to see well, hear the audio, or use a mouse. 😞 That's the reality for many people with disabilities. Making your website accessible means making it easier for them to navigate, understand, and interact with your content, as well as giving everyone a chance to engage with what you offer. By making your website accessible, you're also opening up your site to a larger audience. So check out our video showing how our Userway tool works and how simple and easy it is to use. Watch how it allows you to do things like: ✔️ adding alternative text for images so screen readers can understand them ✔️ letting users customise text size, spacing and colours ✔️ amend settings to prevent seizures in people with epilepsy So if this is something you'd like to find out more about, get in touch and start making your website more accessible today! ✔️ 07840 198977 📩 info@websitesorted.com

🎁 I want to share a piece that I am SO very proud of! With guidance from my amazing, passionate colleagues at Center for Inclusive Design & Innovation, we present: The Assistive Technology Gift Guide. Did you know that one in four Americans has some kind of disability? And if you're like me, with dozens of folks on my holiday shopping list, the odds are good that someone with disabilities is on your list, too. Give a thoughtful, helpful gift this year with the help of this guide! (also, I got to talk about my favorite video game of all time- can you guess which one it is?) https://lnkd.in/e-kXZjWq

Trigger and content warnings: Why it's essential to include and ask people with disabilities for feedback about our content and sound design. See more to read the story. I sent a video I produced about the impact of noise on people with disabilities to a friend who's highly sensitive to sound. "It's great, but my daughter—who is also super sensitive to sounds—and I got the fright of our lives when we pushed play on the video. We weren't prepared for the sounds in your video," she said. "What should I do?" I asked. "Just include a simple warning describing the sounds in the video, so people sensitive to sound know what to expect and can prepare. Also, make sure they can understand the video without sound."
