It's happening tomorrow! ALLEA is jointly organising a 3-part #invitation-only #workshop series, together with Re-Imagine Europa, on decoding #polarisation in the debates on #sustainable #food systems, in which we tackle the “who”, “what”, “where”, and “why” of polarisation, and explore “how” we can depolarise the critical conversations needed to arrive at #innovative solutions for an #inclusive and #equitable future. In the first workshop, illustrious speakers, Barbara Gallani (European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)) and Professor Sir Charles Godfray (Oxford Martin School) share their insights into who the various players in the food system are and how their #interests, priorities and worldviews vary and #intersect when it comes to designing #Sustainable Food systems for #Europe. #Limited spots available! If you would like to participate in this workshop/series, please email ronald@allea.org to reserve your spot. 🖥️ Actors and Agendas – Analysing “Who” are the Players in Sustainable Food Systems and “What” are their Interests 📅 18 Oct, Friday 🕛 1100-1300 CET Read more about the workshop series here 👇 https://lnkd.in/dxRMuApu #farmers, #policy, #food, #strategicdialogue, #europe, #agriculture, #sustainability

Prosostenible is talking about Buy Better Food in its latest issue: https://shorturl.at/ZstUs ☀ According to a recent study from Carbon4 #publicfoodprocurement, the process by which government departments and local administrations purchase food for public canteens, emerged as the the sector with the highest potential for mitigating #climatechange, when compared with the other sectors analysed. 👩🌾 Investing on #publicprocurement is essential not only for its climate benefits but also to positively influence a whole range of other areas, from farmers’ and workers rights as well as consumers’ health and dietary quality to animal welfare. This happens when cities set appropriate criteria in their public buying processes that require complete transparency throughout the entire supply chain and include specifications regarding the quality of the products. 🎯 This is the core mission of Buy Better Food: advocating to put in the spotlight the potential of public procurement in fostering #healthier, more #equitable, and #sustainable food systems! 👉 To do that BBF is asking local governments all around Europe to endorse the Manifesto on Sustainable Public Food Procurement: https://shorturl.at/F67Og 📍 Several European cities already demonstrated the feasibility and benefits of sustainable public food procurement: https://shorturl.at/9tmJF Fondazione Ecosistemi, Eating City, Organic Cities Network Europe, IFOAM Organics Europe, Skutečně zdravá škola, Mensa Cívica, European Public Health Alliance (EPHA), ICLEI Europe #sustainablefoodsystems #sustainablefood #healthyfood #foodsystems #localfood

Interesting interview about the challenges and opportunities ahead in Europe's food system with EIT Food Chief Executive Officer Richard Zaltzman. Zaltzman says that if the EU wants to ensure healthier and greener food production, "Alignment among EU Member States is imperative to safeguard biodiversity and vital for food security and water security." I completely agree; I believe sustainability can't be achieved individually. Companies need to collaborate and put competition aside to innovate and scale healthier, more sustainable food solutions. What do you think? Do you believe collaboration across the food industry is possible when united under the common goal of improving sustainability? #Sustainability #FoodIndustry #SustainableFoodSystem

Today is World Sustainable Procurement Day! 🌎 There's a vital need for mandatory trading criteria for the food offered in European public canteens. We believe that public food procurement provides an amazing opportunity for tackling many sustainability policy goals on one plate 👏 👉 Public canteens, and in particular school meals, are low-hanging fruit for the implementation of the #EU #FarmtoFork strategy. They can be catalysts for food system transformation if their public spending actions include ambitious requirements that go beyond environmental or ‘green’ requests. 📢 Join us in advocating for at least 25% of non-European products to be fairly traded 🍎 Check out our #FarmtoFork Procurement Manifesto for more info: https://lnkd.in/eSyyByFq EU Food Policy Coalition ICLEI IFOAM - Organics International IFOAM Organics Europe Compassion in World Farming Compassion in World Farming EU Eurogroup for Animals European Environmental Bureau #FairTrade #SchoolFood4Change #WorldProcurementDay #F2F

🔍 What are some hidden benefits of short food supply chains? As the demand for local ingredients grows, many of us are working on making more local products available in the market. However, we should be cautious about falling into the “local trap,” which assumes that local is always inherently good and sustainable. This perspective can overlook essential considerations such as values. The true benefit of short food supply chains goes beyond just reducing distances. Here are some advantages we want to highlight: 💜 Emphasizing values over distance: It's not just about reducing food miles; it's about the values and practices of those involved in the food chain. For instance, products in local food chains can vary greatly in their farming practices, from conventional to organic and other sustainable methods. We should focus more on understanding the values instead of just measuring and minimizing distances. 👨🌾 Inclusivity for various farming practices: Short food supply chains empower small and medium-sized farmers who are not part of large or global supply chains. These local food chains provide opportunities for farmers to transition to more sustainable practices, often involving diverse crops in smaller volumes. By connecting them with a varied local customer base, these chains support their transition efforts and promote agrobiodiversity. ⚖ Reclaiming our right to food: Strengthening local food systems increases our food sovereignty, which is crucial amid supply chain and climate disruptions. Food sovereignty aims to build resilience and empower people to choose the food they eat based on their values and the production methods they support. This empowerment gives individuals the knowledge and autonomy to make informed decisions about their food choices. 🔀 Contributing to the food transition: All of the above give power back to the people. Consumers and farmers get the missing incentives that are required to transition to a more sustainable, just, and inclusive system. 💡 Have you discovered other hidden benefits you would like to share with us?
